Twitter help, how to Tweet?
Discussion
Yes laugh away but I have never used Twitter.
I have an account and have posted on a well known supermarket twitter feed to complain, it appears my tweets are just being seen by the supermarket, how do I make them public so anyone can see them and respond? Does the supermarket control this in their settings?

Are you using it on your phone or your computer?
If computer: look for the button with three dots down the left side, click it, then Settings & Privacy. From there, select Privacy Settings, and then Audience and Tagging. There is a checkbox at this point. If it is ticked, your tweets are private to the people who follow you.
If mobile: swipe right to bring up a list of options relating to your account. From there, again Settings & Privacy, then Privacy Settings. The toggle to make your tweets private is first on this list.
The easiest way to find out if you're tweeting privately or not is to open an incognito tab on your browser, then look at your own profile. Unfortunately you are entirely beholden to when the supermarket chooses to respond to you.
To add: Are you replying to their tweets, or tweeting at the supermarket itself? I would suggest you tweet as if you were not replying, then add @Supermarket. Due to how Twitter shows replies to popular tweets other people are unlikely to stumble upon it unless the algorithm favours you.

http://www.momthisishowtwitterworks.com/ has a good basic explainer.
Messages are just you and them - https://twitter.com/messages
But if you sent them a tweet like - "@moronpeople I wish to make a complaint" it will be seen by everyone who follows you (probably no one if you are new or just your friends and few followers). For others to see it they will need to be following the @moronpeople and they will see the reply, but if @moronpeople said send us a message to discuss further them it's private only.

Out of interest, what prompted you to use an unproven (to you) method of contacting the supermarket?
Rather than, say, just telephoning the supermarket's customer services team directly?
I would say that the response time for major companies on Twitter is generally 4-8 hours.
I tried calling and could not get through, I sent them messages through their 'contact us' and never got a reply. I did get a reply last week on twitter but could not see my tweet or their reply in their feed. Rather than, say, just telephoning the supermarket's customer services team directly?

They have replied to my tweet, asked me to DM them, which I think I have done, clicked the 'envelope' icon. My tweets still are not showing up on their feed as far as I can see. Any way I hope I will get somewhere.
You might find you can see your tweet if you click "Tweets & Replies" at the top of their feed.megaphone said:

Sending them a Direct Message (the envelope icon) will not show up in their feed. It's essentially a private message between you and them.miniman said:

For anyone even remotely active on social media like Facebook, it is a matter of time before a suggested 'news' article appears recounting someone's success in using Twitter for customer service. Unproven maybe, but there are so many instances of it working that I can't begrudge anyone trying it. As a bonus, there's accountability beyond a phone call when you can refer back to a paper trail which (depending on DM or tweet) could potentially be public.Rather than, say, just telephoning the supermarket's customer services team directly?

Thinking of customer service set against the eyes of the world, it's almost dystopian. All the same, it works.
Just to follow up on this. Thanks for the help, I can now see my tweets in the supermarkets feed. I have received a DM reply from them regarding my complaint, basically a cut and paste job.
Just for a bit of backgound, don't want to get into a whole covid debate. Supermarket in question has a hand sanitiser station, the dispenser has not worked for months, staff are aware but do nothing. Small pump bottles in a tray on the floor not working etc. I have complained to the staff, the supervisor on three visits, and to the 'customer services', now on twitter. Staff are not interested, minimum wage, 'it's just a job' type attitude.
So, Twitter, can't say I that enamoured with it, not very user friendly, too much clutter, too much advertising, can't see me using it much.

Twitter is a s
tshow really and only of use to wannabe celebrities just promoting themselves and products.
At the supermarket ask to see the manager and tell him you will post pictures of how he is not meeting government guidelines on facebook groups about covid, the police and local news.

Or just take a bit of personal responsibility?
