Does anyone know anything about Fibre to the door and Openreach's roll out plans?

Recently both Trooli and Openreach have been going round this town installing new cable (well definitely fibre in Trooli's case) to all the streetside manholes.

Trooli have started to advertise fibre to the door, however Openreach say the exchange is not a priority one for fibre to the door. I still have 15 months to go on my Broadband contract with Vodafone and need to decide whether to pay the cancellation fee and go with Trooli or just to wait for Openreach to release their version to the other broadband suppliers.

Exchange concerned is Crowborough 01892 65xxxxx

Do you actually need the faster speeds fibre to the premises can deliver?

Currently I am only getting 38.57 down and 4.9 up (observed speeds at the BT Broadband checker site).

I struggle occasionally with connection on Teams calls which is worse whilst daughter is at home on Team calls as well. In the evening speeds and streaming can be shaky.

I can survive with what I have but ideally could do with something faster/more reliable.

Do you need a car that does more than 70mph? Silly question. rolleyes

Op, assume you come from this exchange? - https://availability.samknows.com/broadband/exchan...

You can register your interest on the BT availability checker, but that’s probably about it unless you know somebody at Openreach.

My town has Cityfibre, but typically it doesn’t quite stretch to where I live and BT have no plans to roll out fttp currently.

What’s the 4/5g like where you live? I get 300+Mbps on my iPhone in a few places near me, but again not quite where I live.

Yes that is the right exchange. No 5g, and no idea how I test the 4g speed. Can see the streetside pole from the upstairs windows of the house though!

Run www.speedtest.net on your phone using data not wi-fi.

I've registered but I will be amazed if it ever happens.

Recently had Fibre up the pole outside the house. The inevitable letter arrived from BT, offering circa 1Gb, but bloody expensive. A friend who works for guess who said just wait, apparently in some areas, BT end up connecting you anyway, apparently on your existing contract terms.

I have Trooli and was the first person in our village to get it installed. It's expensive but the connection has been rock solid since it was installed last April. Would absolutely recommend it.

What they charging out of interest? I am on Virgin 350MB at moment (can't get 500 here yet) which is fibre to cabinet in street then coax but that serves the 4 of us in the house OK at moment

Our village had all the FTTH infrastructure put in during the first lockdown - there were tons of Openreach people and contractors here, apparently some villages they were scheduled to be at chased them away!

We started getting offers in the middle of the year and Full Fibre 100 is now same list price as my 80mb FTTH, although I got (for BT) what I thought was a good deal so I pay less. I'm stuck with BT anyway as I use Call Sign on the phone for work and I don't think anyone else offers that. All that calling services stuff that used to be extra seems to be included now so that saves quite a bit.

I'm surprised it was put in here as the village is mostly old people and no-one at the time that I spoke to seemed interested, although, to be fair, most knew what it was. The only person in our road who's got it is someone who just moved in and I think it might be mandatory now to have fibre.

BT does plan to get rid of copper wires - I've seen 2027 suggested - so makes sense to encourage people to move over.

Cityfibre came down our road last summer and ran cables up the poles to distribution boxes but I haven't heard anything since. Some story going round that Vodaphone have first dibs for a while.

I had a look at YouTube videos on what equipment is installed in the home and it looks as to me there could be a major upheaval as my router is upstairs and some way from where the phone line enters the house. Plus TV, Sky box and other bits are connected via powerline adaptors. Conversion is doable but a lot of faff!

Interesting this should pop up. Hyperoptic are installing a cabinet over the next few weeks very nearby.. Prices look promising, reputation and feedback seems legit. Anyone on here have any direct experience of them, good or bad?

I'm in a village not far from the OP, and the best I can get is 20Mbps ADSL ( no fibre ) I work from home with a desktop PC, Macbook , VOIP work phone and my wife has a Windows laptop. Desktop, Macbook and the Windows laptop always online No problem with Teams or Zoom video calls, phone calls or internet usage at all, even with a VPN open to my office.

Will Vodafone install a second phone line, my broadband with them is 20£ pcm (inc line rental) for 40MBPs so I’d assume price wise yours would be similar?

Or just use the app to boost a particular devise?

If you have any ‘slow’ devises you can always split the frequency.

Ie our SKY/Apple tv/TV is hard wired.

Computers/tablets on 5ghz

Phones/heating/cooker (etc) on 2.4ghz

Just had 1Gbps FTTH service installed (Cityfibre/Vodafone) - first 6m free, then £50/m, 24m (looks like the deal is now £45/m). That's all in (free router/no line rental/phone number included). Wifi runs about 500Mbps to devices. There may be some throttling around evening - will monitor.

Plan is to see how reliable it is, then bin BT - they're more expensive with Line rental and a max'ed out 29Mbps line (<5Mbps upload).

Do I need 1Gbps ? Both daughters now studying from home, me WFH and Perfect Planet on iPlayer 4k biggrin
