3 of us working from home, son #2 is getting disconnected when son #1 and me are fine.

FTTP 900/110
BT Smart Hub 2

Extract from the Smart Hub logs for his laptop 192.168.1.249. Turned it on a 09:02 this morning, looks like it disconnected and reconnected at 11:31 and 16:49 today.

His laptop is running a corporate VPN which assigns a 10.x.x.x address and appears to route everything through it, I can't ping the Smart Hub or any other 192 local addresses when the VPN is up.

Is there anything in the logs that indicates why it is dropping? I'm pretty much at the limit of my network knowledge.

Are you all on 5G? Is he far from the router?

I separated 2.4 and 5 on our Homehub and most devices are connected on 2.4, although our issue was devices seemed to try to hang on to 5G and not switch over to 2.4 themselves.

It doesn't co-incide with something random like a microwave being run, does it? Mine rebooted the other day when wife put the vacuum cleaner on, but I tried it a few times afterwards and it didn't have any effect.

He's on 5G, same as son #1 and quite a few other personal devices, I'm on ethernet.

He's maybe 3 metres away in a straight line, router downstairs, he's directly above. Standard new build construction built in 2000.

Will check his driver status. I've also rigged him up with a powerline adapter to see if that helps.

I’m on the same connection and setup. I find WiFi flaky for VPN when I was working near the router.
I’ve switched to Ethernet and it’s fine since.
I’m now working far away from the router and using power line and it’s also been fine. Perhaps random disconnects every few days but not really affecting me.

I've found vpn over wifi flaky before. Get an ethernet cable and plug him directly into the router, see how it performs then. Just run it through the house for a test.
