My kids seem to burn through lightning cables at a fair rate. I usually replace with original cables but wondering if there are any decent alternatives that are lighter on the wallet.

I recall horror stories of fried homes and phones a few years ago so have kept away from the non apple cables.

TIA

Second the Amazon Basics.

Save the hassle and buy longer ones, I wish I bought them sooner.

The fried ones were likely due to the plug not being fused. The cables themselves are OK

+1 long cables are better for kids as they have zero mechanical sympathy and will just overstrain shorter ones using the phone while on charge.
We've had great success with the Amazon basics.

I buy the Poundland ones. They work perfectly well, and I no longer care when my son kills another one.

I got a 3m Anker one last year, really useful. Big enough to use the phone while charging in most rooms without needing to sit near a socket.

Anker. 100% Anker!

For extra peace of mind go for one of the braided cables.

Another vote for Anker

MFI certified (unlike a lot of cheap market stall/ebay cables)

better quality than apples OEM cables and about half the price.

the braided ones are even more durable if its a cable thats going to be moved around a lot.
