I use an Integrated Development Environment to write C code for microcontrollers. When you start a new project a load of files related to the project are created, the only ones I have been interested in are the .c and .hex files. Over time a number of projects build up and can be opened and edited as required.

One of the files is an xml file called project. Occasionally I have found All of the project files for All projects have lost their contents so the projects won't open. Starting a new project and copying over the .c file gets it going again, as does starting a new project and copying the new project file to replace the empty one.

What could suddenly empty the contents of all the project files ? It is as if they have all been overwritten with an empty file.

I have the feeling it may happen after a power fail, but why do 20 or so separate project files all become empty ?

Is the directory version controlled?

Don't think so. Think there is an option for version control but I have never used it, I just save copies outside the project as I go. What made you ask that ?

Just that sometimes version control can delete (or overwrite with empty) such files when syncing with the sourve repository.

Other than that, not sure what else it could be. Maybe there’s some housekeeping or antivirus cleaning it out?
