DSLR WiFi Boost - Will this work?
Discussion
Hi all.
My DSLR (Nikon D500) has built-in WiFi. Using one of two apps on my phone or tablet I can stream live video and press the shutter to take a photo. I use this to photographs birds in the garden. I watch from conservatory but would like to watch from my desk, some distance away.
The D500 WiFi is weak, it will reach the conservatory but will not reach my desk. If I buy a Booster/Repeater thing and plug it in a mains socket, will that do what I hope it will do? Normal WiFi gets around my house just fine, it's not a big house.
Part of me thinks "yes of course" and part of me is pretty certain I haven't thought this through...
Cheers

If the camera is genuinely acting as an access point, I almost can't see how it wouldn't work - the booster is just retransmitting an existing network.
One possible issue is if the Camera's DHCP server only gives out 1 IP address, in which case set the repeater up with a static.
You're not the first person to consider this: https://community.netgear.com/t5/General-WiFi-Rout...
but unfortunately there's no conclusion reached.

I will have another play, and am hopeful that the other forum might provide and answer, but for now it failed simply because the Snapbridge App (which is universally hated) only wanted to connect directly to the camera.
The camera creates a network which is called "D500" and the repeater works perfectly well (very well in fact for £17.99) creating a network called "D500_EXT"
The app will connect to D500_EXT but will not bring up the "take pictures" function. It remains greyed out, even though there is a suitable camera on the network.
There has to be a way, and I am hopeful that the other forum will either say "can't be done" or far more likely "can be done, you need to buy this..."
To be honest it is actually working at present with the new app (DSLR dashboard and a direct connection to the camera) and I have a lovely view from my desk of the bird feeder containing niger seeds which I am hoping will attract goldfinches.

My guess is the network name is hardcoded in the app. Unless Nikon have been really unhelpful and hardcoded MAC address.
Thanks for the pointer to DSLR Dashboard - I'm currently pondering what to buy to replace my D7100, either a D7500 (old) or a mooted Z70. I'd rather buy newer, but I do a fair bit of bird in flight and air show photography, so I'd prefer an optical viewfinder to take out that excuse for bad shots.

Actually I can change the network name on the camera to anything I want, it just seems to my small brain that the app is looking at the repeater and saying to itself "that's not a camera".Thanks for the pointer to DSLR Dashboard - I'm currently pondering what to buy to replace my D7100, either a D7500 (old) or a mooted Z70. As to cameras I've tried mirrorless and can't be having it. I see the advantages but I have a D750 as well as a D500. The only thing that would make upgrade would be a significant improvement in low light performance, but those two are already very good indeed.
I will however buy a D810 as a 3rd body when they get down to around £600.00, I fancy having a 45 megapixel camera in my armoury.
