I have had an Alexa working satisfactorily for 8 years in my living room. Recently it has lost control of two of my Phillips Hue lights and now has extremely slow reactions.
Typically when I say "Alexa" nothing will happen for 8 seconds until it lights up in "listening mode". There is then an 8 second or so delay before carrying out any instructions.
Additionally I cannot now access the radio although a year old unit i have in a different room works well.

I hear that Amazon has "detuned" these older models. Surely this is illegal or sharp practice at best. I believe something similar used to happen to IPhones.

Or is it something else ? The software is up to date

Not the same as your issue, however I've noticed that our dot keeps dropping music, it used to be fine and play for hours now it just randomly stops playing.

Have you tried a reboot and/or factory reset?

I have not tried a factory reset. When questioned it assures me the software is up to date.

I've got a few echo speakers and our gen 1 now does this fairly often.
It used to work fine but now it just stops playing mid stream and then won't recover. You ask it to play and it says it will but no music comes out and the only thing that fixes it is a hard reboot at which point it works for a while.

The later models all work fine. I've seen a fair few reports of the same issue and my guess is that amazon are choosing not to prioritise fixing it.

Thats exactly it, I was guessing it was an update that isn't perfect. It's just annoying that it worked fine for years.

Have you recently changed to a mesh WiFi system? People are saying that the Tends Nova ones can cause this to happen.

Following Funky gibbon's suggestion i went for a factory reset. It tried saying that it was not registered and refused to do much else for three tries then settled down and is now back to spec again.

I had issues with the radio but this was overcome when I logged in with my BBC account details.

Can I just ask te OP if its the first Black ( there may have been a silver or white one too) tower like unit with the swivel control top ?

I'm in the other camp (Google) and I use other manufacturers than Googles own as I have found they have better sound. I did originally start with Alexa and I always thought their first swivel top device was an engineering classic. Absolutely brilliant design

I had this exact problem with our black tall one. I tried everything - then just bought a new one. It won't connect to the wifi now.

It would be really annoying if this is an Amazon scam.

Remembering that your Alexa call goes back to Amazon servers, I think there could be an issue there as my Show8 has had similar issues recently - once the first command has finally worked then responses are quick, but I have had to wait up to 10-15 seconds before - more annoying as this unit is more used for cooking timers than my Hue/Zigbee system.

I have one of the original devices and it started being unreliable. Replaced it with the latest version, and re-located the original to the office, where it gets switched off every night.

The mains re-boot seems to keep it working better - had no issues with it in the last 3 months.
