I've got a Xiaomi A1 phone, which runs stock Android as standard.
It's got 64GB of storage, which was beginning to fill up, so i bought a 128GB SD card to add some more room.

Inserted card, formatted it when it requested, then it asked if i wanted to transfer files across to the card, which i clicked yes. It then said it was going to transfer 16GB of files.

Once it had completed i checked the storage, and prior to buying the card i was using 52GB of 64GB total. Afterwards it says it is using 45GB of 64GB (so not much space made there) and 87GB of 128GB is used on the card.

So where has all this extra "stuff" come from? Where has the 87GB of data come from? 65GB is listed as "system", which is huge. That means there is more on the SD card now than was ever on my phone.

How do i get my storage back?

Just a thought but has the phone got a proprietary backup app that's done a full backup of the phones data? I know my Huawei has such software included as part of the EMUI interface it uses.

Not that i'm aware of. It's an A1 phone, meaning it uses stock Android, so backups are via Google Backups.

I'll have a dig through the apps and see if there is anything that might be a system backup.

Was the SD card you bought from a trustworthy supplier? There are lots of fakes around which report a large capacity, but which don’t actually have it.

I’m not an Android user, but iPhones have the same annoying storage reporting, with ‘other’ taking up masses of room without explanation.

Do you have a proper file manager app installed yet. I quite like Solid explorer but theres loads of others.

In Solid Explorer if you navigate to the top level of the SD card, click the menu and choose properties you can then click the content tab and see exactly whats taking up the space.

I've downloaded and installed a trial version, but I can't make head nor tail of it. For a start, it only shows "Storages" as the Samsung SD card, no mention of internal storage so i can't see if files have been duplicated rather than moved. Then it says the SD card is 20.34GB used of 58.48GB, whereas Google Files says it is 87.05GB used of 128GB...
