I've stopped ordering cds from Play and CD-Wow etc because I was getting sent copy controlled cds which I didn't want (for ripping and listening to on my iPOD).

From what I can see, these sites don't tell you whether the cds are copy controlled so I get them from Tesco etc where you can see for yourself.

Is there a way of finding out whether cds are copy controlled, or can I by-pass the copy control altogether (without hassle).

I use CDex (http://cdexos.sourceforge.net/) to rip to MP3. I have never found a CD yet that it cannot rip (even the copy controlled ones).

It has CDDB builtin and seems to be extremely quick.

Hope that helps!

I have yet to find a CD my PowerBook won't rip including the large number of so called copy-protected CDs I've received from CD-WOW.

CD Protection is just "bad" sectors which are ignored by stereo but make CDRom styled players die no?

CDEx is meant to work well to "beat" the protection, but I certainly can't get past it and it means I have numerous CD's I can't listen to (Nora Jones & many Sarah McLachlan albums). I'm guessing it's to do with the DVDRom & DVDRW I have in this machine but nowadays if I find a protected disc it is sent back to manufacturer unfortunately.

Itunes ripped my copy controlled Nora Jones albums (well both of them) with no problems at all.

Ditto with my G5.

I have sent CD's back to both Play and CD-WOW (at their expense) complaining about the copy protection and they have sent me 'normal' versions of them in response.

I just get my MP3s from www.allofmp3.com now - while its legality is still in doubt I will continue getting my 320kbps album for £1.50

Are these CD that can't be read at all by PCs or just won't copy?

I've only found one ever that couldn't be read by my PC at all. It's a complete pain, as I have all my music on my PC, I don't have the CDs with me, there's no point.

If it can be played, it can be copied.

You need a cheap soundcard with the CMI8738 chipset (not a Soundblaster) and S/PDIF input, which you feed from a standalone audio CD player with S/PDIF output.

Doesn't even need to be software! Remember the CDs that were "protected" by the Cactus Data Shield technology? That could be bypassed by using a black marker pen or some electrical tape!
