Outbuilding router problem
Discussion
I’ve got a TP link router plugged into my 5e Ethernet socket in an outbuilding. It was working fine to provide a WiFi signal to a tv & computer until today and now it’s stopped working. The router has an orange light suggesting an isp problem.
I’ve tried all the basic reset options and plugging it into other sockets to see if it has the same fault, which it does. The internet suggests changing my lan settings. I’m not really sure I know what I’m meant to do with the lan setting. It’s a SKY main router.
I’d like to just fix it by following the internet advice but don’t seem to be getting anywhere. I’m happy to just by another router but would that fix the problem?

So, if I read this right, you have a sky router in the house somewhere. From that there is an ethernet cable to the outbuilding, where the TP link router is plugged in.
Is the TP link showing the orange light ? or the sky one ?
Do you have internet in the house ?
Sorry - haven’t been very clear. Is the TP link showing the orange light ? or the sky one ?

Yes, Sky router is in the house and is working fine. Ethernet cables run from here to various rooms in the house and the outbuilding.
The TP link in the outbuilding is showing the orange light. It is also showing an orange light when plugged into Ethernet sockets in the main house.

Is the TP-Link a router, or an access point, or a router configured as an access point i..e DHCP server turned off and connected on one of the LAN ports?
I’m afraid I don’t even understand this. I would guess at it being a router configured as an access point.
The TP link was put in the outbuilding ad the wifi from the house didn’t reach the outbuilding. It worked (for the last 2 years) by being plugged into the Ethernet socket and provided a wifi network for the outbuilding.
Sorry if this is either obvious or unhelpful info. It’s like a foreign language to me.

Have you power cycled the TP link router ? Years ago a friend had a netgear router that would just lock up and would have to be power cycled.
The light on both ends suggests the cable to the outbuilding isn't cut completely, but maybe it is damaged - check the plugs on both ends to see if there are fraying wires etc. If you still don't get any luck take the tp router back in to the house, plug it in to one of the other ethernet cables and see if you can get it to work.
Either the TP Link router has died or the cable to the outbuilding is damaged.

it's fine. Thing to be careful of with routers is they give out computer network addresses if you plug things in to the LAN (inside) ports unless you turn something called DHCP off.Two things on the same network giving out addresses can result in clashes, which causes weird behaviour.
If you stick to the port on the router that is intended to go to the internet when you connect it up, you should be fine.
