Can't log-in to gmail on Chromebook
Discussion
Had an Acer Chromebook for years, always worked fine, always been able to get gmail on it etc.
But for some reason now, I can't get into my gmail account on it. It just takes me to a "Settings" pop-up menu, which lists my gmail account, but I can't click on it or do anything with it.
Exactly the same happens on youtube, when I click "sign-in" it goes to the same "Settings" pop-up menu, which again I can't seem to do anything with.
I've cleared the cache/ cookies etc, logged back in, but still the same.
Am I missing anything obvious? Thanks!

It's taking you to the account management Settings menu by the sounds of things.
What version of Chrome OS are you on?
Are you signing into a different GMail account to check mail than the account you use to sign into on the Chromebook?
Are you signing in through a browser window, or through an app?
The multiple account handling option was added sometime in the last 24 months - I can't remember when exactly. It's mostly to do with Play Store apps and using multiple accounts across them, but also supports web apps. It sounds as if you need to authorise your account here, and haven't done so yet.
Answer the questions above, and post a screenshot of the Settings menu you are taken to, and I'll try to guide you from there.

Thanks for the help! Answers in CAPS.

What version of Chrome OS are you on? IS THIS IT? Version 76.0.3809.136 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Are you signing into a different GMail account to check mail than the account you use to sign into on the Chromebook? NO.
THOUGH IT DID PROMPT ME TO SIGN IN TO ANOTHER GMAIL ACCOUNT A WHILE AGO, THAT MAY HAVE BEEN WHEN THE ISSUES STARTED, BUT I DELETED THAT ACCOUNT IN THE SETTINGS PAGE YOU REFER TO ABOVE (I THINK IT SAID SOMETHING LIKE REMOVE ACCOUNT, AND IT'S NOT SHOWN ON THIS CHROMEBOOK OR SETTINGS PAGE SINCE, AND I'VE REBOOTED/ LOGGED OUT AND IN A NUMBER OF TIMES SINCE ON MY ORIGNAL/ PRIMARY ACCOUNT).
Are you signing in through a browser window, or through an app? BROWSER.

If you go to settings [for your chromebook not gmail], search for my accounts, you can add additional accounts to your signed in user.
you can also get there Going to settings > People and opening your signed in users.
This is different from the manage other people menu which allows you to add users to be able to sign into your chromebook. Adding them there won't let you access anything without logging out and signing back in.
If it is a corporate account you might be restricted so you cannot add it to your own account.
When setup correctly you can click on your profile icon on the top right in gmail and choose the other account.

Go to that menu you've seen;
Settings>>>People
To the far right of your email address you should see a right facing arrow. Click on that arrow.
Follow the prompts about sign-in having changed etc all the way through. It should ask you to enter your password at some point. Once done and you're finished following the prompts you're all set and good to go.
Thanks all. A combination of the above and a powerwash seems to have sorted it!
Logged back in again, had to recover my account at one point, but all seems OK now (apart from losing a few bookmarks, but I can live with that).
Have got gmail OK, can log in to youtube, it seems business as usual, thanks again for the help.

Glad you're sorted.
Can I ask - had that particular Chromebook been left unused for a period of time?
If a Chrome OS device doesn't connect to an account online for a period of time then it'll still allow you to sign into the Chromebook using the account password, but will prompt you to re authenticate the account again by signing in through the account menus mentioned above.
It sounds very like what you ran into...

No, very much used daily. So seems even more odd...Can I ask - had that particular Chromebook been left unused for a period of time?
