I've installed a new SSD in my laptop and all seems well, it's showing up as the D drive so next step is to mirror my HDD to it. Before doing so I decided to check out how to change the boot order and am a little stumped.

It's Windows 10 and I have UEFI boot order which shows OS boot manager to be the first thing to start. I was expecting to maybe see an option for boot to start from drive C with drive D somewhere further down the list.

Do I just need to clone the drive and OS boot manager will work out for itself where to boot from or am I missing something?

Pictures says a thousand words so below is the screen I'm looking at.

Have you got 'Secure Boot' enabled (if you've never touched the bios, then this is probably still set from the factory).

If so, turn it off so it shows you alternate boot drives - otherwise it will only allow booting from C.

Thanks, yes I do have that set but Google suggests turning it off could create further problems such as drivers failing. Once switched off, to turn it back on may include re-installing Windows so all seems a bit complicated just to change the boot drive.

Clone the drive. Swap the new drive for the old one, and the laptop should see it as "C", no need to change anything.

A PC should boot from drives other than C with secure boot on - it is checking for a cryptographic signature on a drive (to prove the boot loader is legitimate) rather than simply forbidding you booting from any drive other than C.
