Plusnet broadband has been poor since I've had it over past few months. Rang them up done all the usual checks and they say I'm getting 36mbs download every online test I do through Google comes back at 8 - 12 mbs?

Am I doing it wrong or are they fiddling the numbers?

Are you both measuring between the same endpoints?

i.e. are you measuring your wifi speed from 3 rooms away via your cheap, ISP-provided router to a speedtest site; and they're measuring exchange to your router via an internal test?

This could help them understand whether the issue is outside the house (i.e. their problem) or inside the house (i.e. your problem).

  • How are you connecting to the router - ethernet cable or wifi?
  • What speed checker are you using?
  • What devices are you trying?
  • Have you tried a new cable?
  • etc.

Not sure if I read your original post - did you say you did the usual tests ? If not then Speedtest is a commonly used one to try from a PC which is wired in to your router.

Did you turn the wifi off when you did this? If not, it might have still been connected via wifi.
