I came home today and decided to check my e-mail - and my computer has died. There is power to the mobo and fans, but the DVD tray doesn't open (no power) and there's no output to the monitor.

I noticed the fan on the graphics card had stopped and was very hot - on closer inspection the vanes of the fan have caught on it's power supply lead and presumably burnt out the motor. The CPU heatsink is pretty cool, but does seem to warm up slightly when the power is on, so I'm assuming the CPU hasn't burnt out.

I took my HDD and plugged it into my son's computer and it's fine - all my settings are intact and working. On my computer there is no power to the HDDs. The PSU fan is working, but the PSU is quite cool.

Anyone got any idea what I should try first? My suspicion is that the graphics card has overheated and burnt out it's CPU, and this has set off some sort of epileptic attack which has fried the mobo - but why then is there no power to the HDDs and ancillaries?

could well be that the video card is shorting out the motherboard - if you pull it out and try to boot up your motherboard should give you a bunch of beeps indicating that it's alive and can't find a video card. That would confirm that it is just the video card. Newer motherboads don't always give audible beep codes anymore though, so just swaping in a different video card would be the best test.

I would first check your/swap your PSU, The fans and CPU will be powered from the +5v line on the PSU,if you can't open the DVD drawer, then you have more than likely lost the +12v line from the PSU.

Sounds like a fuse or the PSU has gone pop when the power lead to the video card fan cut through (and shorted out?)
