Trying to decide what route to follow for music in
Our new place.

Previously, I ran everything thorough a NAD amp and B&W speakers, but I’m wondering if this is a bit ancient
These days.

TV needs to be updated so I’m considering a decen
Soundbar.

Having never used one and not yet been able to
Play in the shops, are these any good for music,
As music sound quality takes precedent over
Tv sound quality for me....

Your "antiquated" setup will sound much, much, much better than a soundbar.
Part is just physics. Decent big sound needs a decent big box, and soundbars can never have that!

Intrigued by this question, having lost my B&W and rotel setup (it just vanished from the garage honest) when I split with the ex I wonder if I can be bothered with the faff again and was looking at the Sonos ARC and surround bits.

I do like a bit of Trance/Dance or even the occasional Metallica concert if I'm in the mood though.

Well worth it.. I don't use mine as a soundbar but for streaming music and the quality is just superb.. I imagine it would act as a very good soundbar. The technology inside is borrowed from there products worth thousands..

A good integrated amp and some decent speakers will always sound better than a soundbar....
But I am a bit "Old-Skool" and just play CD's !

I use an elderly Denon 'Receiver' AVR X1000. It has ethernet, bluetooth and optical connections.
The MS10 bookshelf speakers are either side of the TV screen, there is a centre speaker underneath the TV, and a really old REL Quake sub is on the floor.

It will play TV audio, cast spotify from the phone, or I can use the Denon App to play stuff of a network drive. It's old, low tech, but sounds great to me.

Recently I tried a sound bar. Didn't buy it.

The Muso is ‘ok’ for music, but in the end it has its limitations, as you’d expect. Play fast rock music loud, and you’ll realise. Better than most soundbars? Of course.

I’d love to know what the Muso has borrowed from other components in the Naim range. It’s not made in Britain and does a completely different job.

You don’t need a soundbar. You need these:

For years I've used an old Yamaha AV amp linked up to 5 Mission speakers. I recently acquired a Bowers and Wilkins sound bar that cost over £1600 new and whilst good not a patch on my old system. So I now use both. The sound bar for normal TV and old faithful when watching movies.

If you are streaming popular music from Apple, or Spotify does it really matter?

If you have a high quality input playing into a poor device, i seen the problem, but if you are streaming via Bluetooth, is it as critical?

I don't known the answer BTW.

Real speakers for me, the Marantz NR1200 is a good unit to bring everything up to date without costing the earth.

A good point, there will be a "what method to....." thread about entire house music in the near future (once my wallet has stopped trembling lol).......

Popped in to PC world this morning and had a listen to a Sonos Arc, it was very good on the demo, I'd have had a loner go if the bellend next to me hadn't ramped up the 100w sony party speaker next to me.

Really am considering one rather than faffing with the cables everywhere.

I do own a number of headphones though which I use for a lot of music.

I recently had a Q-Acoustics Media M4 Soundbar. This was specifically marketed as a HiFi soundbar. Fairly basic, no crappy surround functions, and it was pretty good to be fair, however, I then picked up a Marantz amp and some Monitor Audio floorstanders instead, and this was a notable upgrade in all areas. I've also had a non HiFi soundbar (Sony with a sub), and for music it was pretty rubbish.

2.0 system > soundbar

As for whether its worth it for streaming, damn right it still is.

It seems to be a niche that went away but I’ve got a Sony HT-XT3 soundbase from a few years ago and it sounds great for a single box design and is probably even more space efficient that a sound bar unless wall mounting.

Another alternative might be to look at a pair of active speakers.

I run a TV through a pair of KEF LSX speakers - using an optical out from the TV. A very decent sound.
