After the latest continual series of Windows 10 updates ( when will they ever fix it) and getting slower and more bloaty ( the calculator takes a good 5-10 seconds to open now - why ) I've been getting a litte pop up box top left saying this application is not responding 'Windows 10' click here to close it or wait for it to respond

If you close Windows 10 can you still keep running the calculator and talk to PH?
What perecentage of bloaty WIndows 10 do you really need?

There's something wrong with your system. For me Calculator opens up too quickly to actually time it.

I manage with ‘none’.
Other OS’s are available. I agree it sounds like your system is nerfed.

It's not a case of Windows 10 being fixed - Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows, therefore, currently, it updates every 6 months with on going changes.

However, from what you describe, you have something seriously wrong with your system. Calc will start instantly (it does on mine) for example.

What machine are you using it on, how old is it, what storage is in it (HDD, SSD, SD, eMMC)?

One of my PCs is about seven years old, has extremely modest specifications, and it is basically instant at stuff like that. There's something wrong with your PC.

I smell 4gb RAM and a spinny disk, and Norton 360 from 2012 smile

I'm using a 9 year old laptop, with an i3 processor and 4GB memory, but most crucially an SSD. Calculator opened up in less than half a second.

Something is definitely wrong with your PC/laptop

I never thought I'd say it, but I quite like Windows at the moment.
It's snappy, mostly looks good and rarely fails.

They're taking their time to Windows 10-if-fi control panel applets and a few other bits that still look a bit Windows-7y but overall it's pretty slick.

I also use macs and usually have several linux machines on the go, but Windows is flavour of the month for me right now.

4GB Ram 3.8GB usable 2.6GHz i5 whatever that is
Does Calculator need more than that?

No but the hundreds of tabs you have open in your browser are probably eating a lot of that ram.

Just back-up and install a clean copy from the creation tool every 18 - 24 months.

Any o/s will bloat up after X number of years.

What's your CPU, RAM and Disk usage percentages ?

Just the overall will do:

Also, what's your CPU's temperature ?

I ask that because years I I had a problem like you describe whereby the whole system ground to a halt and it was taking forever to open a say a Word doc. Turned out the CPU fan had failed and the CPU was red hot. And because of that it was throttling massively. Popped a new fan on, and Bob was indeed you Auntie's live in lover and it all returned to working normally.

Yes, that's right.

If you close everything down and then you should be able to start task-manager (it might take a while). If it doesn't open up then it really is buggered. The CPU should be just a few %, if it's not, that's your issue.

Check the fan to make sure it's spinning and/or check the BIOS to see how hot the CPU is. It's only a guess mind you, but as I say, an overheating CPU could be causing what you are seeing.
