How does Google Maps decide where my desktop PC is?
Discussion
Dumb question but I'm just curious.
When I open Google Maps on my work desktop PC it alternates between the following locations at random for where it thinks I am:
1. Where I actually am (this is the least likely outcome)
2.Our company's head office (and where a lot of the server equipment is, so makes sense)
3. Just outside Horsham in Sussex, for no reason I can fathom
What is governing this behaviour?
Especially the Horsham bit!

Reverse ip lookup of your external ip address. If you are on your work VPN then it will be routing your traffic through your works public IP so will pick that as your location. The surrey thing could be a secondary datacentre your company occasionally routes traffic through. Possibly.
indeed you will have your work network NATting your traffic through proxies and firewalls that exit to the Internet via different routes hence you'll have many routes to the Internet.
my company presently has 7.
if your company uses a cloud-based proxying system like zScaler, it will be many. Many many many.
