Tablet for Kid

Our 6 year old has an old 2nd gen ipad his aunty gave him a couple of years ago. Mainly used for youtube and school games/learning. Its go to the point where its nearly unusable. Many apps wont work and even youtube in safari now regularly hangs. Its served him well but time to upgrade.

I see the new 8th gen ipads are £330 which i thought was pretty good. One of them should last him 5-6 years i'd hope but it is still quite a lot to spend on a youngun' and i can't help thinking i should be able to get something with longevity for a lot less.

Is there an android tablet out there that will last the same sort of time but at a much cheaper price?

Fwiw I switched from iphone to a Google Pixel 3a a couple of years back and have been impressed. No bloatware unlike other android phones and it was a lot cheaper than Apples equiv at the time. IN many ways i prefer it to iphone.

No doubt he's at the age when he'll soon start wanting to play a few game on it so something with enough power to run minecraft or whatever the kids play these days.

The wife suggested an amazon fire kids but reviews seem mixed and i think i'd prefer to get him a proper adult tablet.

Any suggestion on what to go for?

My daughter has a 2019 iPad (9.7”) ... I debated a cheap android tablet but I know the iPad just works and is best in class - plus it’ll def last a decent length of time

Samsung Galaxy S5 lite. My 6 year old has one and it's great.

The newer Amazon Fire tablets are fine too, much better than the older models which were really sluggish

Huawei Media pad M5 lite 10" + some sort of protection. They are incredible value at £200 (on sale now £129) and super reliable, we have 3 for many years for each kid. Samsung and Amazon fire did not last much.

Only negatives are older Android and the company with bad reputation.

I got samsung galaxy tab A's for my 2, plays any game fine, netflix, youtube the lot and cost £100 each. Great devices for the money. They have a 10 inch version if you want a bigger screen.

Avoid the amazon / kindle fire tabs, they are st.
