I wonder if anything like this exists? Better half wants a couple of cameras outside the house - front and back. There is no power supply externally so the camera would need to have a rechargeable battery. Some seem to offer backup to a (paid for) cloud based service whereas there are a few that have onboard micro SD storage. Obviously it will be connected to the WiFi network so she can receive alerts while she's at work. A speaker is on her list too.

Is it possible to save to a NAS? There's a few Tb going spare and the ability to watch on the TV is something she wants.

SD.

Something like the Blink Outdoor?

I was skeptical that battery life would be poor but apparently not.

any possibility of installing network cable ?
camera can then be PoE (power over ethernet), connected to a switch, and to the NAS
also gives a huge choice of cameras with lots of features
(wifi cameras often have limitations)

There are plenty of wireless battery operated cameras that come with an NVR.

But, as said running a cat 5 cable and using POE to connect to NVR is a better solution. (If at all possible)

I know you suggest using existing storage, but the NVRs are so cheap as part of a kit.

Our neighbours have Arlo battery cameras.

I believe they report back to a hub which can be connected to external storage for local (non cloud) recording.

Most modern IP cameras will allow FTP. Strangely a lot don't allow SFTP but if your local to a NAS shouldn't be a problem.

Also it depends what your other half wants one for.

You need a decent resolution and lighting to be of any use.

If it is to deter then just buy some fakes and some security signage (but that can have some unintended consequences)

If it is to collect images of sufficient quality that in the event of a break-in you can supply the police with good enough footage to identify people in the dark/low light then evaluate carefully...

I'd suggest having a look at the Eufy kit. They connect back to a "Homebase" hub which has its own internal storage, enough to store hundreds of clips. All accessible through an app, and clips can be downloaded individually.

The 2C is the cheapest, I think, and gives a reasonably decent image quality. Battery life is advertised at 6 months, maybe nearer 4-5 in reality, but a solar charger is now available that will trickle charge so no plugging in required.

Wireless range is fairly reasonable, maybe 25m through masonry walls.

Edit to add - the movement sensor isn't foolproof and some instances will go undetected. This is sensitive to placement, you ideally want people to be walking across the image from left or right to be detected. Coming in from dead ahead can be missed.
