I recently upgraded an old computer (Dell Optiplex 780) from 2x 2GB 12800U RAM modules to 2x 4GB modules of the same spec, salvaged from a couple of dead computers in the loft. All worked fine.

In view of this, a friend gave me some PC3L 4GB RAM 12800U modules. Note the extra 'L' after PC3.
I thought - and he said - they should be OK for upgrading another similar old computer. The old computer has PC3 modules (not PC3L).

However, after changing the RAM, upon connecting the power cable (not even trying to switch on the computer) the computer briefly whizzes as they often do when power is reconnected, but then it just beeps and won't do anything (other than power off with a 10s press of the power button).

I thought PC3L is capable of working in PC3 slots but not the other way around.

What's going on?

Thanks,
R

Some memory controllers (later ones) support 3L (which is lower voltage I think?). Earlier ones tend not to.

Thanks.

So is there nothing I can do to persuade the old computer to accept and use the PC3L RAM?

Doesn't look like it - https://www.techdim.com/ddr3-vs-ddr3l/ says Ivy Bridge onwards.

Ah. That's unfortunate. These computers have Wolfdale-type processors which just preceded those listed.
