Apologies if this has been asked or gone over but I'm weighing up the options of what to do for my next gaming set up.

I used to be a hard core Console gamer but as time goes on I only ever fire them up when a game that catches my eye appears.

Graphics card shortages aside, what can be had for around £1k? or to put it another way could I specify something that will run a modern game at a decent frame rate?

I have a good monitor, mouse and keyboard so nothing needed there. It's been ages since I've built anything but if a self build saves some cash that can be spent on power then I'll do that.

Bonus points if it will run with my Occulus but not essential.

Thanks!

We are sadly in the great GPU desert zone. A decent GPU alone like the 3080 is commanding silly money. 1k pre built will get you something but not sure it would be on par subjectively with a modern console - mostly because GPU prices have gone nuts.

I do appreciate it can do other things and others may chip in to say its possible and I have it wrong.

Did you have a performance level in mind ?

Something that will run say, Cyperpunk 2077 at a decent frame rate as a benchmark and not that I enjoy flight sims but they also seem to set the bar for smoothness and player feedback. I realise this does not get around the need for one or more decent GPU's though and won't pay over the odds for something that is being artificially inflated to build mining rigs etc.

I would use it for other things but I have a decent MS Surface running Linux that I use day to day for the usual stuff

Get a PS5. Immense more bang for your buck. Every GPU I have recently bought costs about the same as your budget.

This is my current decision point. I'm currently speccing a so-so gaming pc for £1500 vs a Playstation or xbox for £500. Most AAA titles are available across all platforms so no reason not to. One of my 3 existing PC's (and 2 work machines) can do the none-gaming duties wink

I believe the PS5 has frame rate of 120Hz? To better that on a PC will need a GPU which at today's rates will cost you almost your entire budget. Plus you'll need a monitor to match it (more £££s).

Definitely stick to a PS5 and spend the extra £500 on a decent tv/monitor to take advantage of it.

I think the main issue is, if you have grown up playing FPSs then nothing matches using a keyboard and mouse.

This is the main reason I would personally stick with a PC

Something like this would give a PS5 a good run for it's money but as you can see the base unit alone is £272 over your 1k budget.
If it is just for vanilla games, the bang for buck you get from a PS5 or Xbox Series X makes it an easy choice. If though you need a PC for other things, value modding and retro gaming then a PC can make more sense. I have both which is the best but most expensive option.

Agreed - for me PC = FPS and the rest is console. For the budget though, PS5 all the way.

You can use a mouse and keyboard on PS5, and Xbox.

Unsure why the OP isn't considering a Series X. Describing his use it sounds like a Series X with Game Pass would be perfect, particularly if you take advantage of the Game Pass offer and get three years for about 120 quid. It's a no brainer really. Plus the Xbox is slightly easier to get hold of.

The quotes keep seeing on the PC-building fora, is that unless you currently want to spend £1500+ then you're better off going for a PS5 or Xbox Series X.

However, getting any current mid-high end gaming CPU/GPU at the moment is a challenge.

Of course, if you're playing at 1080p then you'll get much better experience than expecting the same PC to deliver 60+ FPS in 4K fully ray-traced scenarios.

Thanks all. Looks like a PS5 will be the order of business when stocks are replenished.

To answer why not to go X box it's purely a habitual thing. I enjoy the PS interface a bit more and enjoy the free games every month, although this is becoming less and less.valubale as the store offloads some proper stinkers but there are the odd gems.

I wouldn't rul out an Xbox though, assuming game pass is what Sony alike their PS+ platform too. I also love the gran turismo series but do miss Forza for the odd game here and there.

As an example I got into the Drake uncharted series by accident, not expecting much and when I started I couldn't put it down.

At this rate I might chop in the two play station 4 sets in the house and use whatever I get as something towards the PS5.

I've recently got into VR via oculus even though it annoys me greatly that Facebook have you over a barrel for the privilege of owning one. I've tried PSVR but it doesn't seem to be as polished.

I got a laptop late last year, Ryzen 4800H, 8Gb RAM, RTX 2060, 144Hz screen, 256Gb SSD for £900. I upgraded the RAM and added an extra SSD for another £150. Been a very capable machine, I'm easily getting well over 60 fps in most games @ 1080P. Depends whether you are bothered about 4K really, this is a really capable machine for 1080P, or even Quad HD on my 34" monitor. Only mentioning it as an alternative as PC gaming is getting silly expensive now.

My son plays FPS on PS5 all the time with Keyboard and Mouse, so I don’t think this is anything to consider?

I think you should look into Game Pass. Game pass currently has 300 free titles, including EA play titles and a bunch of AAA titles, but the real kicker is that all the Xbox exclusives are going straight onto it.

At the moment you can do a deal to get 3 years for the price of 1 effectively. It makes for cost effective gaming. It swung me away from the PS5 as some one who games casually.

Interesting you say that as I have been looking into a gaming Laptop and that was pretty much the spec I had settled on.

Perfect - I had considered buying the mouse and keyboard kit for the ps4 and reasearch showed me that you could use mouse and keyboard as an option but it never felt as good as the pc. Something to do with the fact the game had been setup for controller and the way it reacted wasnt the same as a traditional pc fps. Maybe that is all a distant memory for the Ps5 generation.

I managed to get hold of a PS5 last weekend.

Very impressive when hooked up to a big 4k TV. I still can't play FPS with a controller though. Interesting to see you can now use a KB&M, I'll look into that.
They are developing a PSVR2 as I understand it.

I'd already ordered a new PC before this became available (at nearly £2k) which is stretching the budget a bit but my existing gaming PC was long in the tooth and struggling to run stuff.in VR on the Pimax.

For your budget a PS5 is hard to beat.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any success playing FPS with keyboard and mouse - in terms of whether it's just a replacement for a pad or whether it feels "native" like it does on a PC.
