Intro to crypto mining (altcoins) ?

This is just a maybe at the moment but can anyone give some pointers on an intro for crypto mining please? These are the sort of questions I've got:

- what would it cost to get a rig set up for altcoins?
- what does it take to run one efficiently? (ie, high speed up/download? UPS?)
- do they run an OS?
- what should be avoided?

Any other pointers would be appreciated. This 'maybe' is based on a comment I read elsewhere about it being easier to mine than buy come crypto.
