Evening

Can this really work ?
My 12 year old reckons this will make our WiFi super fast, I am not as confident.

We currently have a 3 4G system running at about 17mbps.

Would this really improve it ?

Thanks

If you’re talking about speed from one item in your home to another, yes it would be reasonably quick. If you’re talking about internet download / upload speed, it’s only going to be as fast as your 4G service (normally tops out for me at 80mbps). A 5G would knock spots off it if you can pick up a good signal (mine is 180mbps) but even then wouldn’t compare to a good fibre connection to the house.

He will be impressed with his file transfer speeds though.

The first step is to test your internet using a cable and compare to the wifi when stood next to the router.

As a point of reference, here is my cabled speed

and this is my wifi speed

I am running a first gen google wifi system which is really not performance orientated.

If you have similar results then the bottle neck is not the router...yet.

Next step is wifi drop outs. Test the speed in places where you might be using a wifi device. I went mesh wifi for this reason a while ago because the wifi router I had was not capable of broadcasting to my entire house. With Mesh, I have 5 wifi pucks that act as mini wifi routers. It means I have decent speeds all over the house and can stream 4k over wifi. (I dont, but I could)

Get this all the time as above check the speeds via wifi and ethernet check for channel overlap with neighbours all the above is very good advice and can't say enough about how its worth doing

Personally I use an aging but excellent Netgear downstairs as an access point for wifi connected via etherenet back to the main router
Then there is another same Netgear at the back of the house serving the rear and garden
The main router was a Draytek but I saw some interesting points about Fritzboxes on here and I got one off someone only the basic wifi model.
Have to say its very good and eeks out a little bit more than the Draytek did

But before buying anything do those tests above and check for any congestion I use a system called inSSIDer to check the wifi channels there are others that will do it
