Kids and iPhones - wants a replacement
Discussion
Here we go again.
Son (15) has an iPhone 7 with 32Gb.
Tells me it's "full", he's deleted all the photos (and stuff) that he feels he can but has obviously retained a lot. Also deleted a few programmes apparently.
He's after a replacement for what, to me, would seem a perfectly good phone although he tells me the battery is running down quickly and it needs recharging when he gets home from school to see him through the evening.
He uses it a lot, both at schooland at home, particularly when he was home schooling. He's a couple of games on it still I think and uses it for little video recordings, mainly of our two dogs and local scenes I think.
First question, is there a CCleaner type programme that would check to see if there's any free space or remove cookies and junk files etc? I assume it's the same as Android/MS.
Second, is it worth getting a replacement battery fitted - would require a 140 mile round trip assuming Apple in Glasgow can do it same day.
Third what are the upgrade options, he's talking iPhone 8 with 64Gb min.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

There is a built in usage app and you can clear from there ... settings / general / iPhone storage ... any apps using a large amount of space should be deleted and reinstalled / logged into the clear their individual caches
For photos / videos it sounds like he isn't using one of the many cloud backups - we personally use Google Photos and it works amazingly well and is dirt cheap now there is not free unlimited uploads (lower quality)
To be honest though his 7 is getting on now and probably due an upgrade.

Thanks, his 7 was bought about 2 or 3 years ago from a guy who was upgrading after the 2 year contract so yes, 4 possibly nearer 5 year old but fully working and not a scratch anywhere. He's suggesting an 8 but I'm wondering if an X might be a better bet? I'm not into iPhones or Apple at all. Noted that the 8 doesn't have a 3.5mm jack socket. Need to see what he uses for headphones (if he ever does - think he's lost the good quality set I gave him but he has a set of Anker buds. For photos / videos it sounds like he isn't using one of the many cloud backups - we personally use Google Photos and it works amazingly well and is dirt cheap now there is not free unlimited uploads (lower quality)

He's 16 next year, he can get a job and pay for his own phone.
Good job the OP has people like you around to tell him how to bring up his kids
He's in anxiety mode at the moment with exams/assessments but he's intending to spend Christmas & Birthday money he's collected.

I would get him an iphone x at least. My daughter has an 8 and she’s 12! So bit stingy to just put a new battery in his 7 IMO.
I would side with the “if you want something better, show me the money” crew. Even has a powerfully built director type, my 6S 32 GB did me perfectly until this Christmas, when i decided to splash out on a 12. Nothing wrong with a 6S, nothing wrong with a 7. If you want to clean up the phone, wipe it. It makes a massive difference, my iPad was transformed by a full reset. I replaced the battery myself on the 6S - tool about 30 minutes and cost a tenner. My 16 year old son now has the 6S and thinks it is brilliant.
With many Android phones a SD card can be added & remove any worry of running out of RAM. I have a phone with 32Gb RAM with an added 128GB SD card. The phone will accept a 256GB card.
The cards are much much cheaper than what Apple add to the price of an iPhone for the larger memory spec.

But then you’re saddled with android and this is not about moving to android…The cards are much much cheaper than what Apple add to the price of an iPhone for the larger memory spec.

80p a month gets you 50gb cloud storage with Apple doesn’t it?
That is surely they answer rather than more on device storage
This is what I have (79p) saves a ton of space. That is surely they answer rather than more on device storage
Have you a link please.
