Strange menu options with CCTV
Discussion
I think this may be the right section for this one. I have a Hilook/Hikvision CCTV system and I access it via its web server page, I can access it via other means like a phone or the actual monitor itself but for day to day viewing I use the web server.
Since I've had it I have had to use Internet Explorer as that is the only one that would work with it. It downloaded a small file from the NVR itself the first time you set it up and you had to allow access to it. Just lately I have tried it on both Chrome and Edge and it now works on both of them but it never asked to download anything. It has one peculiar difference though, when I use IE I get the following menu when I click configuration

You can see the first menu option is headed LOCAL, it has various settings but when I sign in via Chrome or Edge I get the following page.

The LOCAL page isn't there but all the other settings and pages seem normal, its annoying because the local page has the option to tick start live view and it loads the cameras automatically, also it doesn't stream as well in Chrome as it does in IE, I would carry on using IE for it but I believe microsoft are kyboshing it soon and also IE won't remember the user name or password for the cameras either which is a pain entering it all every time.
Any ideas why this should happen, I sign in with the same user name and password and I've tried changing the settings like allowing popups etc but nothing makes any differecne, why would it work on one browser and not the other?

Guessing the 'Local' function uses some deprecated functionality that is supported in IE but not in a modern browser.
Can you remember any details on the file it downloaded? Anything to do with ActiveX? Java?
Think it could have been an active X program. Can you remember any details on the file it downloaded? Anything to do with ActiveX? Java?
This is what I've found in the ie settings page

I can get it working in chrome using the internet explorer extension but then it wont save the password again just like the real internet explore doesn't. On my old Qvis system I think I used a dedicated program called CMS viewer or something like that and it was just one button press and they came up but I've tried using the dedicated Hikvison program but its way too complicated.

Just checked mine to see what it was like. IE11 and the newer version of Firefox are both identical and show "Local" and I can save passwords. I junked off chrome a while ago as it felt too laggy and lazy for me and the fan was forever kicking in.
Maybe your browser done an auto update without you knowing, or it could be worth looking into what firmware version is the latest and what improvements, if any, have been done since your current version. The developers might have known something was happening on Chrome then patched it on a later version?

Can't comment on your setup however we get the same with our Samsung NVR at work.
If you access it via IE, that allows the ActiveX control to run and give a full user interface including multi-camera view whereas other browsers that won't run it, show the basic UI as that's all they can support.
Samsung (or more accurately Hanwha Techwin) supply software to install on Windows that does the same as the ActiveX control.
Maybe Hikvision has similar availability for free?

I can't make it work properly at all. I've upgraded the firmware on the DVR to the latest one, I've downloaded the latest Firefox but it behaves in exactly the same way that Chrome and Edge do, no difference whatsoever. I dont have access to the local menu and when I start the live stream they all start in the sub stream resolution, if I change it to main stream the picture quality improves but goes very laggy.Maybe your browser done an auto update without you knowing, or it could be worth looking into what firmware version is the latest and what improvements, if any, have been done since your current version. In Internet explorer I have full access to all the menus, it auto starts the live view and all of them are in main stream mode with a perfect none laggy picture. The only downside to using IE is it won't save the user name or password so you have to input it every time you want to open the page.

As no other browser (apart from IE) supports Active X controls, functionality will be different / limited within those browsers.
I'll be surprised if this is not mentioned in the manual for the CCTV system.
Have you tried updating the recorders firmware?
support for other browsers is improving in later firmwares on the hu/hthi-k series, I series nvr and deepinmind ranges I fit.
a lot of functionality comes from the ie plugin though, the ie plugin decompresses the streams on the pc whereas the other browsers do transcoding on the recorder before streaming a lower quality picture to the pc.
There is a chrome helper plugin that improves it a bit bit IE still works best.
have you tried the lite version of ivms4200?
I dont know about how late a firmware you can get on hilook though, hilook is hikvision special needs cousin.

That is odd as I've just tried it on chrome, downloaded the extension, turned my laptop off then on again it shows local. Maybe uninstall/install chrome but save any bookmarks and other settings before doing it.In Internet explorer I have full access to all the menus, it auto starts the live view and all of them are in main stream mode with a perfect none laggy picture. Can you plug your (and I'm sure I noted it was a DVR whereas mine is a NVR so maybe each has different settings) into a monitor to enable you to go direct into the DVR settings to see if it's the same as the web browser?
What version of IE are you using ( a quick google search will show you how to tell and apologies if I'm teaching you how to suck eggs). I'm using IE11.

As for the version of internet explorer, well the about page looks like this, thought it would say ie11
Not that it's that much help to you, but I have Hikvision cameras and using Chrome and Win 10 (both 64 bit) I do see the Local tab. I did have strange issues when accessing the camera on different laptops / computers, some would initially show the playback and picture tabs, some wouldn't - all very strange!! I can see all tabs on all machines now - but I don't know what made them appear - sorry.
I've decided to use the official hikvision app for now, ivms-4200, it gives by far the best clarity picture and does work very well. The only thing I'm a bit sceptical of is it wants to run a separate server program all the while separate to the actual app, it has the icon in the task box near the clock all the time. I can shut it down but then the app takes a longer to load again because it has to load the server first.
Is the server fine running all the while or will the Chineese government be looking at all my files?

The server is to receive alarm, event and access control notifications while the main app is closed. Xi Xinping wont be sitting at home skiing himself watching your cameras, he already has access via your dvr anyway.
Did you try the lite app?
Just tried the lite app, its a lot less complicated than the full one, I do have a resolution problem with it, the display is set to 150% scaling and the lite app doesn't like it but if I set the scaling to 125% its fine. Never known why windows makes everything tiny on 100% scaling.Did you try the lite app?
I've just had a quick play with my Hikvision setup to try something and it made me think of your thread. If you login to your camera via Chrome browser, look in the top right corner area - there should be a link to 'download plugin' - this then asks to run everytime you re-boot your PC (well it does on mine) and it allows better resource allocation - part of which is it also allows the 'Local' to appear in the menu and also shows 'picture' and 'playback' tabs for me. If you can't see that option, the address it gives for me is:
http://hikdownload.hik-connect.com/web/webplugin/w...
The link above shows it as ver 1.0.0.0. but when downloaded, it is actually 1.0.0.15
