Dad phone shopping. He currently has a Moto G5, it's about 3 years old, 5" 1080 screen, 16GB storage, 2GB RAM. He's mainly looking for something with more internal storage, there's an SD card in the phone, but apps will only run from the internal storage so the SD card is really for files.

He's on Tesco pay and go, and wants to keep that as it is, so it's going to be a SIM free phone for about £150 that he can slot his existing SIM card into and carry on. Looking around at a few like the Samsung A12, A21s, Moto G8, Sony L4. The one thing I've noticed is that the screens are bigger at 6" or over, but lower resolution at 720. Without seeing one in person, a 5" 1080 screen to an over 6" 720 screen seems a big downward jump.

So what is out there for around £150 SIM free that's good, preferably with a 1080 screen and at least 32GB storage, more than 2GB RAM would probably be good too?

Xiaomi Redmi whatever is offer. I got a Note 8 last year for £99, brilliant piece of kit. They had Note 9T on offer the other day, but they have offers pretty much daily. Check Hot UK Deals out, they post loads of Xiaomi deals on there.

I quite like the OPPO range at the moment...

OS is fine and specs seem competitive.

Are you sure about that? I've had a G4 Plus and I could, a quick google suggests you can on G5

I could only recommend the Moto G 5G, but it's £250. It is 5G enabled so more future proof.

Nokia give you vanilla android and guaranteed updates on fairly decent phones at that price point. They can always be had for less than their RRP so get the best one you can. The higher the number (both per and post the point) the higher up the range (first number) and more recent (second number) they are

Fantastic phone - but massive if you haven't had a 6.5 inch phone before.

I got one but had to return it as I haven't had a new phone for years and didn't realise how big they'd gotten.

I generally go out without a coat, and never carry a bag and you can't really carry these in slim jeans pockets!

Finding a good phone under 6 inches is a struggle, I ended up with Google Pixel 4a.

Thanks, Xiaomi seems popular here so I've sent him the Amazon link for the Redmi 9T, I'll chat later with him to see what he thinks.

Bought a Motorola G7 Play last year while waiting for something else to turn up - £100 from Argos.

Camera is noticeably very much poorer than the expensive phones, but battery lasts longer and does everything else an S10 does.

A second hand one. Loads of places sell them and I'm sure he won't miss the latest whizz bang screen tech.

I'm still using a one plus 6T as I've no need for anything fancier, they're probably cheap as chips now, similarly the Samsung s6 or s7

Hi, my Moto G5 stopped working a few months ago, I replaced it with a Motorola One Hyper. One of the reasons for purchasing this phone, is the 128gb of internal storage.
