Is there any reason why I cannot use a phone sim in a dongle/router?
The unlimited data only sim deals seem to be more expensive then an unlimited data/voice/text sim plan.
Must be on Three network as it is the only network we seem to able to get a signal at our caravan using an external Poynting Antenna.

No you can use any sim that has access to the data network. The price difference is probably accounted for by the "acceptable use" policy

Any sim should work.

I have a vodafone phone sim in a router, been there for 18months no issues at all. Checked it this weekend, woke up and connected straight away.

we use a Huawei Mifi router with a Smarty unlimited sim for our caravan. we aso used it recently in the house when we were having intermittent drop outs with normal broadband. We can also travel with it if need be as it has 4hr battery life

Make sure you get a SIM that allows unlimited tethering and I think you should be OK: https://3g.co.uk/tethering

Same with our boat (though on EE as the Three signal is poor in my area).

Thanks for all the input, looks like an unlimited phone sim is the way to go.
I did try to use my phone sim to try it out in the router.
The router takes a micro sim, my phone uses a nano sim. The router did come with an adapter card for using a nano sim. But when I tried it, the thing nearly got jammed in the sim slot so I gave up on that idea.
Will look out for a cheap sim deal to use.
