I guess they do.

Been connecting to BTBroadband for 18 months now using their "own" Voyager 100. Yesterday the connection started playing up, today couldn't connect at all. So I spent a few hours wasting time and money on the line, checking the line and then on to the technical helpdesk.

At the end of it all, the guy couldn't track down the course of an "Error 721" that kept appearing.

Along the way he managed to blame my Windows XP (because it's not showing a "system tray" or something with lots of "up and down arrows") and has passed the problem on to someone else. I was left expecting to wait another 48 hours for someone to get back....

Meanwhile, I have a box sitting here because Mrs Beano wants to set up a network so that she can work from home. It suddenly dawned on me that I should try out this Netgear Router. So within ten minutes (it would have been less if I'd actually read the important bit in the manual  doh!), I am trying to work out how to start my ADSL connection only to realise that "always on" means just that!

Apart from the fact that there seems to be an infrequent screen coming up for me to dial in, which must be a hangover from the Voyager set up, the ADSL connection is now fine.

I guess modems do fail from time to time in mid use?

The GF's son's did last night.... Well it didn't actually. He wouldn't get off MSN so I took the portable phone up to bed and just kept going on and off hook.... Every time he tried to redial I just threw a few extra digits in from upstairs...

I was struggling to contain my mirth when he came upstairs looking very grumpy indeed

Still, he did what his mum said in the end

Fire up Internet Explorer. Goto "Tools" -> "Options" -> "Connections" and select "Never dial a connection". Should get rid of that pesky dialup dialogue.
