I've currently got a Galaxy A70 on EE network which is now out of contract and starting to misbehave and has a dodgy charger connection. I need to upgrade it but I'm struggling to find a decent deal. I'd like to stay with EE as their network is one of the few to give acceptable coverage where I live and want to keep the monthly cost around £30 (4GB data) as currently. Ideally I'd like to stick with a Samsung phone too.

Previously I've always gone to Carphone Warehouse but they no longer deal with EE. EE themselves haven't got anything tempting so where should I look next? buymobiles had some decent deals but mixed reviews, is there anywhere else I should look?

How about asking EE to move you to a sim only tariff, then you can buy an unlocked handset from wherever you like.

Save yourself some money. Buy a phone & get an EE Simm only deal.
I currently have a BTSimm only deal (same network as EE) with unlimited calls & texts with 4GB data for £5/month. EE do SIMILAR.

This.

I switched my 5c to a SIM-only with EE years ago and when that finally began to give up the ghost I just bought a sim-free XR directly from Apple.

I must be missing something! My original plan was to switch to sim only but EE want £20/month for me to keep my current tariff (4GB of data per month) on a sim only contract. This only saves me £10/month from my current contract cost to put towards a new phone - equivalent to about £240 over the duration of a normal 24 month contract. I couldn't find anything even half decent for that price which is why I ended up looking for a phone upgrade on contract again...

You might be missing something. Currently have an unlimited everything, sim only, 5g from EE that I got direct from them for less than £30 a month.

£20/month SIM only for 4 gigs of data is a complete piss take however, and no offence, they offer these deals as people just arent savvy enough to shop around

I quite like shiny phones and so play the game every 2-3 years

You have essentially 2 choices:

a new 2y monthly deal which EE will NEVER, EVER offer you on decent terms if youre an existing customer

or

buy a SIM free phone outright and get a SIM from someone who wont take the mickey. Plusnet are decent value and I believe use the EE network

If you stay on the same network the deals you will be offered will be poor so I have sometimes gone PAYG to port my number to a temporary provider then port back in to the network Ive just finished my contract with under a new contract. Sounds tricky but isnt

Look at online comparison sites, although I often find Mobile Phones Direct have the best deals. And use Quidco too for a bit of extra cash off. And never keep a contract for longer than the minimum 2y term if youre getting a new phone.

Having said that Im currently using a Oneplus I found via this forum which is excellent and I bought outright with a Vodafone SIM acquired through Quidco for 14 quid/month for 100GB of data. I bought the SIM pre covid and pre new car which has its own data for Spotify so am using a bit less than 100 gigs per month, if only Id known.........

Cheers

Yeah, he's missing that EE are shafting him..!

@OP - Port your number to PlusNet (which uses the EE network as they're owned by BT, just like EE are) and they're offering 4GB for £6/month on a 30 day contract with unlimited mins/texts. That gives you another £14/mo in the 'phone budget' (an extra £330 over your theoretical 24 months).

By porting you keep your number and the coverage/signal will be identical as it's still EE. Except only £6/mo.
