Hi all,

Bear with me here as I know nothing about this kind of thing.

My new house has a number of Cat/Ethernet cables all terminating in the boiler room. The cables run to locations where the TV’s will be, to wifi extenders, to CCTV DVR recorder, to Philips Hue lighting control box, the garage etc

Probably about 10 ethernet cables requiring plugging into the router, which is also located in the boiler room.

The router only has 4 Ethernet ports on it, and I have been told to get a network hub or switch.

Can anyone recommend something decent, or even point me in the direction of the item I need, because knowing me and IT, I’ll buy the wrong thing biggrin

Thanks

Assuming you don't need PoE you most likely just want a cheap unmanaged gigabit switch.

Thank you.

The CCTV cameras are all PoE but they are powered by the DVR unit they plug into (as far as I know).

So I presume your recommendation will be perfect.

Well they're cheap cheerful gigabit switches so they're literally dumb.

You can spend a bit less and get 10/100 switches but you'd be shooting yourself in the foot to save £20 IMO.

You can spend a bit to a lot more but unless they do something you know you need it's a bit pointless.

Other than PoE (which adds cost) I can't think of much that you might need a switch to do but not know you need it to do if you see what I mean.

Basically if everything works plugged into the router but you just need more ports so it can all be plugged in at the same time it should be fine.

Thanks again.

I’m ordering the TP Link one smile
