I am trying to sort out extending the WiFi from the home to an outbuilding. Up until now, I have had a ethernet cable running from the back of the main router (BT SmartHub 2 - I think!) going into a NETGEAR router. This router has recently stopped working and I am now trying to work out the best solution going forwards.

Am I best to look for a range extender? Or look for another router similar to the set up I had before?

One word:

MESH

There is a whole rake of Mesh set ups that will not only extend, but give seemless transfer.
Recent thread on here vouching for them

Possibly not mesh. Depends how far the outbuilding is. Mesh only works well when nodes can be close to each other and as few as possible walls between them.

Powerline may be the best solution, if the outbuilding has power to it. You can get WiFi versions.

Agree with the above, I've just done it with Devolo Magic 2 powerline and I'm getting 70MB in the outbuilding and the basement.
