Minor panic!

I'm started to become a bit paranoid about back-ups on my home pc, so I decided to see what System Restore does as I don't think I've every used this before, but I get an error when it tries to load as follows:
The server {4991D34B-80A1-4291-83B6-3328366B9097} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
So I follow the instructions and it turns out that the registry code above applies to a program called 'Background Intelligent Transfer Control Class 1.0', which I then I tried installing from MS but it made no difference.

BTW, I'm running on XP home edition, with AVG, Zone Alarm, Adaware, Spybot, MS Antispyware all refreshed and run recently.

I thought I'd try doing a windows update and the site identifies that I need 4 fixes but it is unable to download them (not blocked by firewall).

Help!

Windows Update relies on BITS these days.
It downloads stuff when your system isn't busy. Sounds like yours is a bit broke

Try this microsoft update here

and see if that sorts it.

Thanks Malman, I tried the update from your link but when I tried to install, I got the following error message:
xp said:
KB842773 Setup Error
Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying.
There is no need to install this update.
I then did some more googling and went to Start>Run>Services.msc and lookde up the properties of BITS it says the service status is 'Stopped' and when I try to start it, I get the following error:
xp said:
Windows could not start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code -2147024894.
The event log doesn't have anything about this so I'm still stuck on this.

Try this

Click Start -> Run then paste the following line into the box

"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%Application DataMicrosoftNetworkDownloader"

and click OK.

Delete the files listed and then try to restart the BITS service.

I followed your instructions, however windows said that it it couldn't find it. Anyway, I navigated to that directory and deleted those 2 files (gmgr0.bat and gmgr1.bat) but it didn't make any difference BITS still refuses to start, even after I tried rebooting as well.

Just for reference, this is the directory I deleted from:

C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataMicrosoftNetworkDownloader

I have now reinstated those files.

Thanks for your help so far.

Is it Event ID 7024 in the error log?

If so this is usually down to permissions on the BITS directory or service.

Goto services and double click on the BITS service. Check the Log On tab to make sure its set to Local system account.

If the above is correct then

remove the "downloader" directory (BITS should recreate it and the files in it with the correct permissions) that you found in your last post. DO NOT delete the network directory above downloader.

Start the BITS service and see if it recreates the directory "downloader" and what entries it puts in the event log. Hopefully it start successfully.

Of course all of this assumes your drive is formatted as NTFS - right click C: -> properties should tell you next to "file system"

Not Event 7024, the errors I am getting is the DCOM error (from my first post, which I get every 30 seconds) and the following one, which I think relate to the System Restore problem I have:

Faulting application rstrui.exe, version 5.1.2600.2180, faulting module srrstr.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00009826.

I checked out your other suggestions:
Log on = Local Account OK

I removed the Downloader directory and it was immediately reinstated WITHOUT the 2 files. I tried to restart BITS but got the same error as before (it didn't reinstate those files). No entries were created in the Event Log from this that I could see.

And lastly c: = NTFS OK

Oh well, I'm starting to consider a reinstall or repair of xp now, only problem is I didn't get (or have lost) the installation discs from Dell

re-install = last resort.

repair = second last resort

If its a Dell it should have CDs with it but I don't think they a Microsoft. It will be a Dell CD with OS disk or something written on it.

So system restore is the initial problem that is causing the BITS error?

You can flush the system restore by diabling and then re-enabling (sometimes works)

Goto control panel -> system -> system restore and disable. Reboot goto same place and re-enable. Reboot and give it a prod.

if it still won't play ball you can re-install system restore components. You may need the XP disk for this or if you have put XP SP2 on the files should be on your drive.

Note: The following file is located in a hidden folder. To view hidden files follow these steps:

Open Control Panel - Folder Options - View tab, select "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types", click OK.

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the windowsinf folder.

Find the sr.inf file, right click on it and select Install.

If the Files Needed dialog box appears, click Browse and point to the i386 folder on the Windows XP CD or to the i386 folder on the hard drive, if it exists.

Note: For systems updated with Service Pack 2, use the C:WindowsServicePackFilesi386 folder.

Problems fixed Turned out to be to separate issues.

I reinstalled XP SP2 which fixed the Windows Update issue. The followed your instructions for System Update which also fixed it.

Phew!
