Ive got all my digital photos on a hard drive in a directory structure based on year, month and day.

Is there a way i can add text to the image and then search for that text? Embedding it in the file as opposed to changing the filename would be preferable.

This would then allow me to search through all my photos looking for images with TVR in the text.

Are you aware of EXIF tags?

You want to catalog your photos with Lightroom and add tags.
Its a must if you have a large collection. Still a pain though if you've never catalogued before starting from scratch.

Ive given this some more thought and i dont think it will be as easy as i had first hoped.

I know of EXIF tags and had tried to add some to a number of my files but the issue was how to search for them. I had hoped to be able to use the windows explorer search but this didnt seem to work. Even if it did it would be a consuming task to search all the files each time, so im guessing a database/catalogue needs to be built that contains the tags and links to relevant files. This is probably where proper solution like Lightroom comes into play.

As a family we run a mix of windows, android and chrome devices and i had hoped to be able to search across all devices, which probably makes the task even harder to implement.

A bit of a left-field suggestion and probably will also cost some money to pay for hosting, depending on how many photos there are, but I find that the Google Photos image search is almost supernatural in its image recognition capabilities. If I search my photo collection (a couple of hundred gig of pictures) it can differentiate between 'porsche' and 'audi' without any input from me. It's not 100% but it really is very impressive.

This is what I mostly use.
Can be a daunting task though.

It's been a long time since I used Windows search for anything.

I use Agent Ransack which allows searching between specific dates etc.

Not entirely helpful to the OP for images - however if the OP needs to find images taken between specific dates etc. this might be useful (assuming the files have the correct date stamps).

You could also use Irfanview and it's associated plugins to bulk change the IPTC info.
