One of my kids is moving to a new city to start his first job. He will be renting a top floor flat and his broadband options appear limited.

BT are offering 8Mbps connection for £28pcm for a minimum 24 month contract. This seems steep and he's also unlikely to be staying there for 24 months.

Can anybody recommend any other options at all?

Daughter #1 is on an unlimited phone data package, for the same reason. Bit of a pain running the Chromecast off a phone hotspot, but better Dad pays for the phone than she pays for the broadband.

Son is likely to be streaming loads of TV

This looks good

Although he's limited to 10Mbps I don't think he'll get much more with 4G?

She gets one sim paid for. If she fancies another, she can buy it smile Bedsits don't massively need WiFi when she ain't there

Three offer an unlimited 12 month 4g mifi contract for £26 a month and first 6 months half price. Whatever network best to get a free pay go sim first and check the signal before committing. No point in paying for a service and getting little or no signal in the location.

Get one of these

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/8652814

Then use something like this to work out who provides the best coverage for the area he will be living in

https://checker.ofcom.org.uk/en-gb/mobile-coverage

Then just go buy a sim only unlimited data deal. When he moves he just unplugs it and takes it with him.

He's not got anything at the moment according to the Letting Agent so he'd have to pay to have it installed.

I’d honestly try a 4G/5G sim before signing a long term contract that’s fixed to the house.

Smarty are cheaper and use the 3 network . Unlimited data £20 a month rolling 1month contract so can be cancelled any time.

4g router , i am in a poor signal area 2/5 bars gets me 25 meg. Ive seen 50 meg when travelling around using the router.

Eta get a proper router , mifis ive never found to be much good.

As above, look at that thread.

Also, which city? 5G may be available - if so a 5G router would be best.

I get 50mbps+ on EE out in the countryside. 3's network was much slower for me, but cities may be different.

I think he's going (gone) for this.

http://www.three.co.uk/discover/devices/huawei/4g-...

I did suggest 5g but apparently it's not great reception where he's going to be located (Central Leeds) confused

Anyway, one more thing out of the way before he moves next week....thanks for all the suggestions smile
