I have 3 drives for my stuff.

C: Crucial CT500MX200 500GB SSD which my OS is installed on.
D : Western Digitial WDC WD20EZRX-00DC0B0 2TB HDD which isn't used except for storing VODs on.
E. SanDisk 128GB SSD not used.

Since a few months ago I've started hearing faint clicks and faint thuds in a fairly consistent pattern, like "click... dum.dum.......................... click..... dum.dum". I had assumed this was my main SSD, but I'm told that SSDs don't make any noise so it won't be that. confused

More recently, I'm finding that my PC suddenly freezes if I go to do something else on it. It only happens for maybe 3 or 4 seconds but in that time it is frozen I can hear the HDD spool up and make the usual handful of faint click noises you'd expect and the screen comes back to life. I'm noticing this in particular when I go to shut down the machine. Start > Shut down nearly always causes the 4 second freeze and HDD spool up before it displays pop-up box.

I've run CrystalDiskInfo and it's showing all 3 are in good health. Main SSD at 91%, HDD at 100% and secondary SSD at 99%.

I am assuming that the disk spooling up noises are the HDD as an SSD wouldn't make those noises(?) If that's the case, why is the HDD spooling up when it's not part of the OS and I'm not asking it to do anything? confused

Because Window has to do things like update the last accessed time for the drive. I tend to configure mechanical drives not to sleep on machines that I actually shut down overnight, and leave the timeout for drive sleep at a few hours on machines that run 24/7

Simple check would be to temporarily disconnect the WD hard drive and see how your computer behaves

Is there a way of doing that within the settings rather than physically disconnecting it inside the case?

You'll need to disconnect it to see.
