Hi all,

Looking at getting a new battery for my XR as it's 2.5 years old now and struggling during the day.

New battery from the Apple store is £69, whilst it is only £49 at somewhere like ismash.

Now it's out of warranty etc is there any point in going with the apple store or is it fine to save £20 and go elsewhere.

Cheers

A few years ago smashed my work iPhone when I dropped it by accident.
Didn't fancy fessing up to IT and getting another device paid from the company cost centre.
Passed it to a bloke at work who replace it for cost of the battery, think he got it from replacebase.
Worked fine ever since.

If it's out of warranty just go to ismash, they give a 12 month warranty on it anyway.

Apple genuine. I had my 6s battery replaced cheaply in a shop , 12 months later the battery swelled up and the phone pretty much exploded into its component parts. Never again.

Eta the only reason i went non genuine is when i tried to book a repair (send away to apple) they wouldnt take apple pay and none of my cards were accepted by them . I just go to the apple store now for any repairs get them done while i wait.

Also, if you ever want to trade it in to Apple to get a new iPhone, then if Apple replaced battery then trade-in value should be retained, which very unlikely to be the case if 3rd party do it (and yes, Apple will easily be able to identify if this was the case)

If, say less than a year down the line, an issue with battery then Apple will just sort it, however with some 3rd party what guarantees are they putting in place (which they’ll say it’s an “apple issue with battery management or such like, not a battery one” i.e. not our problem gov’)

For the £20 or whatever it would save you, I’d just get Apple to do it, not worth the hassle of some 3rd party.

I would understand considering 3rd party if the cost difference was £100+ as you could afford to replace it twice for the cost etc.

The premium to go genuine seems pretty reasonable to me.

I've got Samsung's but never found a third party battery that is anywhere near as good as OEM.

Conversely, I replaced the batteries on an iphone 6 and an iphone 6s with units from amazon that were higher specification than OEM years ago. Both phones still work perfectly and have not show signs of degradation.

Having said that, is the XS water proof? If so, I would go to Apple.
