I have a tablet and phone to sell, not particularly current but still have value. Reading around on the recommended ways to sell seems to be full of pitfalls. Cash on collection appears to be the best bet - but I'm concerned that limits the addressable buyers and therefore price. Going through the brokers appears to reduce the price by 50% vs retail.

Asking the PH knowledge base for your experiences and advice!

Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace - you'll have to deal with lots of idiots but you can get cash in hand and less chance of being scammed.

eBay basically offers no seller protection these days.

Cash on collection via eBay. 100% Protection. List on a variable 80% fee weekend for a month and see how it goes.

Just to be contrary, I’ve recently sold a couple of grands worth of tech kit shipped through eBay - Dell XPS laptop, XBox, CPUs, RAM kits, phones. No probs whatsoever. Just make sure you charge the buyer for Royal Mail tracked and signed, take pictures including serial numbers

It's fine until a dodgy buyer either claims there was no 8tem in the box when it arrives or they send a faulty item back or removes a part they need from the item and in those cases ebay inevitably sides with the buyers regardless of if you have photos of serial numbers etc.

I'm glad it worked out fine for you but it's a well known ebay scam

I only use Facebook now. But then I’m more interested in a hassle free sale and not maximum gains. I’ll agree a price and let the buyer know when I’m at home. Communication is via Messenger which I reluctantly have installed anyway. If they don’t turn up it’s no big deal. If they do I get cash in hand and no fees.

The Gumtree app and mobile site sucks by comparison. eBay is too full of chancers and scammers to worth bothering with. And the selling fees are extortionate.

Music Magpie or similar, no point bothering with Facebook for the sake of £10 / £20.

Facebook really is very good unless selling very specialised items, then eBay wins.

No fees, and there is a HUGE user base. Basically just about everyone, and local.

I put up an X-Box (albeit only a 360) and a B&O stereo for free on Facebook recently. Not a single sniff on either of them.
Amazed that no one could make use of either of them.

I know they fetch that and the B&O more but genuinely can’t be bothered, felt sure the village hall or some local group would appreciate them but no, so in the bin they go frown

I've found listing stuff for free doesn't work with Facebook. You get weirdos with nothing better to do wasting your time saying they want it and then not showing. Genuine people are wary of getting something for nothing. Stick it on for £20 and you'll get more success.

Definitely this. People don't trust free stuff and those that do respond think nothing of dicking you around for weeks on end.

Stick something decent on for cheap and it'll be gone in an hour.

I have experience with giving stuff away.

Don't. :-)

I tried to give away a whole load of free (good) furniture when downsizing once. I used freecycle and a few FB groups. They were almost exclusively time wasters or piss takes (I'll have it but you gotta deliver to me ok?).

I then listed it all with cheap prices and if all flew out the door.

The same in London when I stacked a whole load of rubbish outside my front window. Old sink, old hoover etc. Stayed there, getting damp, with a "Free help yourself sign." One guy cut the plug off the hoover, othe than that it didn't budge. I then put price tags on everything and it was all "stolen" within days.

People! :-)
