Our trusty Canon Pixma MG5650 is now printing blurry text.
Tried all the cleaning and alignment procedures but this doesn't seem to have rectified the problem.
Printer is around 6 years old, so perhaps it's time for a new one.

Scanner and wireless printing functionality is required, and printer is used for mostly B&W and colour documents in A4 and occasional photos.
We don't need to print larger than A4.

I am tempted by the Epson EcoTank printer due to the refillable ink, but not sure about the quality.
Would like to avoid HP if possible as had issues with this brand in the past.

TIA!

I've had a couple of Epson printers and both ha e been excellent - I only use it for photo printing though.

Current one is a 720WD multifunction job.

Are the refillable tank ones that much cheaper to run?

If you're mainly doing text I'd get a laser. Even colour ones aren't that expensive now. Not good for printing photos though.

I had a look at a few laser printers with scanner function and they are pretty expensive.
Tempted though, apparently inkjet printers have a limited lifetime.
Lots of positive reviews on the economy of Epson refilable tank printers.

My Epson inkjet multifunction has been great for years.

Nozzles have rarely clogged and the cleaning function has always sorted it when it isn't.

I make sure I use genuine inks and papers, mainly because colour reproduction is better. But probably helps with longevity too.

HP do a multifunction laser for a couple of hundred quid. I have an HP colour laserjet (and a black and white one) and it's superb.

I switched to aftermarket inks few months ago, and that probably caused the demise.
The ink runs out fairly quickly, and due to the configuration it's about £50 for set of genuine inks.

I am thinking of going for the Epson with refillable ink, as the genuine ink is fairly cheap and economical.

edit: had HP printers before my current Canon, and too much hassle even on genuine ink. Leaking etc so bit put off by HP printers.

I was in the same boat as you just a few weeks ago actually. My own canon Pixma had failed to the point of being irrecoverable so I decided to dump it and replaced it with an Epsom XP-6100. Happy with it so far and the photo I printed looks fine as well as ordinary A4 text prints. I'm only an occasional printer user so I didn't go for the refillable option in the end. I think it was about £90.

We have an EcoTank ET-2710, it feels a bit light weight and "plastic" but does the job.

There is some banding on dark images when using the standard print quality setting, changing to high solves this issue but apart from that its fine.

Being the lowest printer in the range I don't think it will do borderless A4 photos but can live with that.

Have printed around 400 mixed pages on the included ink and there is 75% of the black and about 80% of the colours left.

Overall I'm sure there are better printers out there but for the relatively low cost it does us and more importantly we can print as much as we like without worrying about expensive ink cartridges - as I said to the Mrs "what's the point in having a printer if the cost of the ink stops us from using it?"

Definitely agree with your missus smile Ink cost was always prohibitive for us, and havinng switched to aftermarket brands seems to affect the lifespan of the printer.

Splashed out and got ourselves the ET-4750. Took a while running through the initial setup and alignment processs, but everything seems to work brilliantly.
Came with 2 sets up ink too which is a bonus. Printed a brochure in colour and B&W document and they look amazing.
I like how easy it is to tell ink levels too, and being able to print direct from mobile is a bonus.
