Home Built Gaming PC (Critique my build)
Discussion
My father (78 years young!) is into the Diablo II series of games but is finding his current laptop a bit slow to play the new Resurrected game.
I said I'd look into options for him and have looked at Dell outlet for laptops and desktops etc but also at building my own (I've built and upgraded previously). Budget is £1000 for just the box (if a desktop) or laptop / best option etc. No need to take into account cost of a monitor as he's likely to use his HD tv as a monitor. I know a dedicated monitor will give better graphics etc, but I doubt he'll get that much benefit over his TV (with his eyesight!!).
How does this lot look?
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/cnm4y4 - one slight change is he already has a 500Gb NVME M.2 2800 drive which can be moved to this system, so that is there for 'completeness'.
Or would I be better off with a pre-configured such as : https://www.cclonline.com/pc/gaming-pcs/iris/horiz...
I know nothing of gaming graphics, so have just done some reading around and trying to pick something that seems half decent.
There might be a pre-configured system that is better...?
I realise if self building that an OS is also required - I've not forgotten it.
Cheers!!

Everyone will have an opinion but it looks fine for normal gaming in 1080p.
The only thing I don't like is the power supply unit. It doesn't leave much wattage spare for future upgrades.
If you had the budget capacity I would put in something much more healthy with a 10 year warranty and loads of room for capacity like a corsair RM850x or a bit lower cosrair RM650x.
It would probably only be of benefit if you upgraded his GPU in a few years but that is what stands out to me. It may just feel like a wasted extra expense but thats my view.
Cheers

I think your biggest issue is going to be finding a 30X0 series GPU that is in stock anywhere.
Probably why he's specced it with a 5600g APU.Here is it running Diablo II Resurrected - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaSc-zzkyEQ
Doesn't seem to need a GPU to play well.
The laptop my dad's currently playing it on is a Dell Inspiron 3593 (i3-1005G1) with 12GB RAM (1x4Gb 1x8Gb) and a 2800 NVME SSD. He's complaining of 'stuttering' and non-smooth gameplay - with me watching on Teamviewer his processor is maxed out and so is the memory. Would he get any / much benefit if his memory was 2 x 8Gb? No dedicated, only integrated graphics from what I understand.

I hadn't actually got as far as looking for stock - but was basing my ability to buy on this link https://shop.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/store/gpu/?p...Seems to link to Scan - who don't have it in stock...

The CCL pre built system linked above has a 3060Ti card but does say 4-5 days to build - maybe once ordered that will turn into 4-5 weeks/months perhaps...?

In the PcPartPicker link. the PSU might be a bit puny for the RTX3060Ti - I think Nvidia recommends at least 600w.
What resolution is the TV, if it's just 1080p then the RTX3060Ti is overkill - assuming you can find one, you can save a bit just by getting a RTX3060 or RTX2060 instead...or sticking to an APU like the 5600G and ignoring a discrete GPU until you really need one and the price comes down.
First thing I'd try though, is a complete wipe & reinstall on W10 on the laptop. You just don't know what crud has been accumulated on it (has it got resource-hungry or multiple AV-scanners installed?).

I'd bought a Scan system back in January and their site was stating 5 days build and it turned into 8 weeks. Having said that the service and machine have been great but delivery time might be optimistic - might be worth giving CCL a call - seems that GPUs as part of a system via a builder is the best route to reasonable priced easily available 3000 series GPUs these days. I paid over the odds for a 3060Ti from box.co.uk they still seems to have decent stock levels and choice but cards way over RRP (if such a thing exists for GPUs anymore)
For what it's worth a GTX 1660 Super is a more readily available card and good for 1080p gaming at a reasonable price point.

Thanks for that YouTube link - so that's with just the Ryzen processor - seems to be ok? So maybe forget the GPU and get a higher spec'd Ryzen perhaps
Ryzen 7 5700g (Vega 10) on Diablo II Res - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHYQtQnpeus
Ryzen 5 5600g will be a little less. With it not being a high speed FPS you wouldn't really tell.
With the APU sharing system RAM I'd look at faster RAM, this maybe - 3600Mhz but also it's CL14 so tighter timings - https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Categories/Products/...

Is part of the issue that the laptop is having to render the game AND then compress a video stream in real time to stream to teamviewer?Apologies if I have misunderstood.

So if I drop the GPU off, upgrade the CPU and mem to this spec - https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/nvbN3Z should it be getting there?
From the YT link above, the GPU (inbuilt) is still the limit, so any benefit in going to 32Gb RAM - more to share?
A couple of months I purchased a Lenovo Legion Pro 3060 laptop for £1125, you get (or at least did) 10% off for signing up to their news letter.
https://www.lenovo.com/gb/en/laptops/legion-laptop...
Just a bit of a curveball, there are three performance settings and it would easily smash that game on highest settings at 2560 X 1600 on the lowest (quietest) power setting.
8 Core 16 thread AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor, 16GB or ram, 3060 mobile 6GB graphics card. SSD is a bit tight at only 256GB but you can buy another 1TB one for around £60 now and just slot it in.
Screen is amazingly nice, so nice that everything else looks rubbish in comparison.
Also "Legion by Lenovo lets you dominate your competitors wherever you are", what more could a powerfully built director require?

Thanks - PSU has now been swapped for a 650w model and it is likely I'll build a Ryzen 7 5700G based system (16GB RAM/3600/CL16) and add a graphics card later once they become available and a little less expensive (if ever perhaps??).
From the links above, my dad will be able to play D2R with this spec but as/when a GPU is slotted in, it will give him the chance to up the game setting a bit more.
