Thought i'd start another thread to save anyone thinking about another console v. PC debate.

Original thread here but I've changed my requirements:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

---

Right you lot. I thought I'd give this thread some CPR and add some thoughts.

I've decided I don't want a PS5, I want a PC. I have thunk about the budget and increased it to £1500.

I'm also acutely aware that GPU's are still a nightmare given recent threads however if I go to a mob such as CCL they seem to be quoting decent lead times and suspiciously reasonable pre-built prices.

At the moment, this is in the basket and so far I've not hit the "fk it, get it bought" button but I suspect I'll get an email saying that delivery will likely be several weeks rather than days. Who knows.

https://www.cclonline.com/pc/gaming-pcs/cobra/hori...

Note this has the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, I can't find this card anywhere online that isn't north of £500 on its own, so am I getting a shoddy deal on the other bits at the cost of GPU?

Thoughts? Original use cases stand, as a refresher:

- Needs to be quiet post boot
- Can effortlessly do the day to day grind of office suite, the odd bout of photo and video editing and so on
- With a little more effort I can have a play with 3D modelling
- 1080p (at least) gaming with a great frame rate
- Able to receive my Occulus Q2 for some of the more heavy lifting required where the onboard tools can't do the job

I HATE the light upiness of all these things but if that's what it means to get decent components then so be it. I'll go through it and dull the bulbs one by one if I need to.

ETA link fix and to state it has no wifi built in. Powerline might do the trick though but I think I want Wifi.
Edit 2: added wifi and 1TB ;cuda drive. £1578 with windies 10.

If you’re anywhere near Tunbridge Wells, I have this in the PH classifieds: https://www.pistonheads.com/buy/listing/12421504 - Ryzen 5 5600X, RTX 3060Ti and absolutely no bling

Thanks but unfortunately not. Glasgow. I think I want a warranty too.

That'll easily play 1080 games at full tilt. It's pretty much ALL about the graphics card. I'm running a RTX 2060 at 2k and can run most games at full tilt, and the latest games at "high" .

I've just gone from 16Gb to 24Gb as for the 1st time I've run into a game that likes more (Star Citizen Alpha).

I'd not bother with the HDD. No matter what you do, windows will, over time, put files on it that are called upon during boot. I removed my last HDD a few years ago. 1Tb SSDs are cheap enough to chuck a few in / add at a later date.

Running noise - you might end up pulling the fans they provide and installing low noise ones - but it's not expensive. If it comes with a gazillion fans you might not need all of them running. Set up the fans properly so the Mobo can control them all. PC builder might be lazy and simply plug them into the power supply direct.

My PC runs almost silently, and then it's the graphics card that spools up most when gaming. Still not loud. CPU cooler and fan choice is also key, but again, easy and cheap to change if needed

Some graphics cards are also much quieter than others of the same chipset - the reviews cover this. i.e. an Asus 3060Ti might be quieter than an Asroc one of the same spec, etc etc some card makers put a lot mroe effort into dealing with fan noise.

Your work stuff, and video editing will be a walk in the park for the machine. Especially now with SSDs - the HDD was THE bottleneck in modern PCs.

Same with Quest 2. My 2060 on an ageing Intel i7 runs vr PC games wirelessly to my Quest 2 no probs.

edit - I see the CPU is water cooled - but of an overkill TBH unless you are overclocking - if not, there is no need at all.

Your pc build spec looks fine.

Just get them to change the case to something like https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/defi...

This is all the case you need and due to having no glass and sound dampening on some of the panels meets your needs as zero bling and all action. It could be lit up like an xmas tree inside and u wouldn't be aware at all.

I built a pc for my dad with this case, similar spec to you and added a Noctua NH-D15 cpu cooler with all noctua case fans. When it hits workload there is some sort of whipser of wind, the rest of the time it is next to entirely silent.

That may not be the end of the world. Depending on how much of a hurry you're in, Alder Lake is due to launch soon, and that will possibly put downwards pressure on AMD pricing.
