During our extension swmbo decided to rip out the old and unnecessary phone cables that included the electric gate buzzer/intercom.

Getting quotes to replace like for like with phone access and activation are £750 or to add a video link is >£1k.

Would a wireless ring camera doorbell thingy work? Distance from my office with the nearest deco is circa 8m so WiFi should be okay and I understand that we won’t be able to control the gates but it would work for Amazon delivries etc.
thoughts?

Only way to be sure is to get one and test it. Do you have a way to power it? If not you'll have to run on batteries and recharge, will become a pita.

I got this for mine: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08QVLVXZX/ref...

Works off a buzzer or a mobile phone. Great quality, it's about 25meters from the house and I've powered it from the electric gate motor.

An added bonus it has motion detection so good for security on the lane outside.

The gates at my old house used SIM card for their (independent) communication with the house.... the gates rang my mobile phone which had the advantage of me being able so answer and open the gates from anywhere. Maybe lots do this now, but it was reasonably new when I had it installed.

I have a Ring Doorbell Pro which has abysmal range. The router is approx. 7 meters away and I have frequent warnings on the Ring app complaining about poor reception, despite my all my other electronics showing a strong signal from the same place (I live in a new build, so shouldn't be any problem with the house construction interfering).

I had to get a booster in the kitchen just for the doorbell which was a pain, but works fine now.

For gates, the biggest issue you will have is finding an smart intercom that has a relay trigger to be able to open the gate from within the app.

The only one i have found (and use) is DoorBird. But it isnt cheap.

We have a DoorBird wired up to a door strike and it works perfectly, on ethernet but running off power adapter rather than POE. It's probably not far off twice the price of the Ring Elite once adding the POE injector though, but being able to trigger something else is the main benefit, its quite easy to do things with its API too if needed. If video quality is important at all, I don't think it really stacks up to Ring and the likes though (I've not used one, just going by what I've seen online). It does have infrared but it maybe compounds the quality problem a bit, but it is clear at night with security light outside.

Depending on what you want to spend, we install the rather good telguard units which use a SIM card or AES do a good wireless intercom product, doesn't use WiFi but it's own wireless signal
