We bought 2x Kindle Fire kid's edition tablets for the kids last Christmas. In theory they sound great - separate child and parent profiles, curated child-friendly content, all the parental controls you could want. In practice though, I find the whole thing is a massive pain in the arse. Our 12 months subscription to the Amazon family stuff that underpins that is about to end and I don't want to have to start paying for it.

I wondered if it was possible to blow away the Amazon-customised Android OS and replace it with plain Android? Anyone successfully done this on a fairly recent Kindle Fire device?

It is possible, on some Fire tablets.

Best to Google "install android on kindle fire xxx", where xxx is your Fire model.

Can't remember who posted this here, or find the post it is from, but check this URL from the XDA-Developers forum - you can look through to see if this way works for your version of the Fire.

I run a fire HD10, and due to slight ineptitude to do anything cleverer, simply side loaded Google Play Store onto it so I can run most Android apps and not be locked to Amazon so much.

Not a perfect solution, in that some are a bit unstable but meh it's only games for the kids!

Thanks - I did try that but haven't (so far) found anything specific for the Fire HD8 10th gen and I don't know how model-specific these things are.

Thank you, I'll take a look.

So I have done this already as a number of games the boys want to play are not in the Amazon store. The problem here is that for them to be able to play stuff from Google Play Store they have to use my profile because you can't make them available in the kids profile, defeating the point of having separate profiles altogether.
