Bought this for my daughter, but we all hate it.

The 'Amazon experience' is pish, everything's locked down like Alcatraz and it's horrid to use.

Looks like it can be rooted or jailbroken, or just freed of its Bezos-forged manacles. Has anyone done this with good results, or is there something else I should try? Like binning it?

Not too worried about bricking it - it was cheap enough and is otherwise a PITA.

Thanks!

Firetoolbox will let you root/jailbreak the device, remove the ads/bloat and also install google playstore via an easy to use interface turning it into a normal Android tablet.

As above, I just stuck Google Play on ours and it opened it right up.

Thanks - I've got Google Play on it but it's all still very 'Amazon'.

I'll have a go with the Fire Toolbox and see if I can improve it. Might be that we just don't get on with tablets - never seen the point in them myself.

If all else fails find an Android ROM for it and use that instead.

I removed all the Amazon stuff off my old Fire 7 and it works fine for watching stuff on the train/plane (mind you not done than for nearly 2 years)

Cheers - I don't have the expertise for that, I suspect.

I've used the Toolbox to the extent I can, but it's still a pretty naff device so will probably get 'moved on' and replaced with something more worthwhile.

Lesson learned, and jungle website crap avoided in future!
