As above I'm thinking of getting an Asus Rog Laptop or similar, how noisy and hot do they run and do they become pretty quite when doing general web surfing stuff etc, and do they last ok on batteries?

Yes they are noisy and the batteries do not last long if you are playing games.

I have a Lenovo Legion Pro and it has three power settings, Quiet, Balanced and Performance. This effectively controls the speed of the processor and the wattage of the GPU and hence the amount of heat generated and the speed of the fans.

I have a Ryzen 7 5800h and 3060 GPU and I run it in Quiet mode most of the time. When not playing games it is as quiet as any other laptop, but as soon as you play a game the fans kick in. I have no idea what the battery life is like when not playing games as I have never used it unplugged.

Thanks for the info, i do have a pretty decent Rog pc and that gets noisy

I was looking at this machine, down to £1400 https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gam... seems fairly hi spec on ryzen 9 5900, 3060 graphics card, only 1 year warranty is a bit tight.

I have an Asus ROG G14 Zephyrus and battery life isn't brilliant if gaming. Underside gets warm but there are lots of exhaust ports to help disperse heat.

I have an old MSI Apache Pro gaming laptop, a decent set of headphones (or external speakers) is definitely recommended as the fans are pretty noisy.

Battery life was never it's strong point, even when new it wouldn't last more than about 60-90 minutes when gaming, although I guess battery tech has improved since I bought it about 5-6 year ago.

I have a Zenbook pro duo (RTX2060/i9980), and that does a sterling job of trying to air fry my hands with its side exits.

In addition to the noise and relatively short battery life, they also have a tendency to get hot (especially when gaming).

And if they have decent heat sinks they are heavy.

Think 6kg Vs 2kg for an ultrabook.

Well i went ahead and ordered the Rog G15, https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/gaming/pc-gaming/gam... It's expensive to me at £1400 hey ho...

its weight is only 2.2~kg i'd mostly use on power rather than battery, hope its fairly quite when surfing or doing office 365 crap.

when its delivered I'll report back, its a jump in spec from my Lenovo i5 z580 which is quite old now and basically a business laptop. Be interesting to compare for day to day use.

Performance will be insane. My Ryzen 7 5800h boots up in under 5 seconds and I only ever run it in Whisper mode. CPU is currently running at 1.06 / 4.45 GHZ and using 3% CPU with a few browser tabs open.

Admittedly those 8 cores and 16 threads are hardly being pushed at the moment.

It's sad that most laptops only have a 1 year guarantee which has a lot of tech in such a small form factor, my oled tv has 5years and fridge 3 years, I'll give it a good stress test when it arrives.

I'll sell my Lenovo on eBay probably get £150 for it help offset the cost. I have Game Pass till 2025 i tried a very low intensity game 'Lake' but it killed my Lenovo on lowest settings hence the Clarkson 'Need for more Power".
