At the moment our family all have separate iCloud accounts and share an Apple Music Family Plan. All of them have additional iCloud storage which carries a monthly subscription.

An Apple One family account would be basically the same price but gives access to Arcade and Apple TV (don't need News or the Fitness stuff that the Premium account provides). You can get a free trial to see if it works for you which sounds good, but one question I can't find an answer to anywhere is what happens if a member leaves the plan or we decide that we don't want to use it any more?

Understand we'd lose access to the account benefitss, but if we've used loads of the shared iCloud storage (i.e. more than the standard iCloud account provides), what happens to the iCloud stuff whenwe leave? Surely you don't just lose it, but are you prompted that you need to sign up for additional iCloud storage separately?

Not sure if this answers your question but I suspect the onus is on you to have your own backups as well or move you stuff elsewhere when you leave the plan - Apple do not appear to have a way of migrating iCloud storage.

My brother currently has 2 Apple-Ids (this is a legacy thing which is a real PITA), e.g. ID#1@some-ip.com & ID#2@icloud.com. He has his subscriptions (Apple Music & App purchases) tied to one ID#1 and his families iCloud storage (2Tb) tied to ID#2 . He would like use an Apple-One subscription and bring it all together which would save money / add Apple TV.

He initially used the online Apple support chat and spoke to a "genius" who told him to simply subscribe with ID#1 and cancel the subscription with ID#2... This sounded like it may result in all data being lost, so he phoned Apple Support.

After an hour on the phone to a so called "genius" the conclusion was that each family member would need to manually backup and then re-upload once the iCloud subscription is moved to the other AppleId - if he had followed what the first "genius" had suggested he it would have resulted in the loss of all of the currently saved data (15 years of photo etc)...

TLDR - if you need to move your iCloud storage between accounts you will need to do it manually by downloading to a computer and re-uploading.
