I recently found an old Nokia brick (1611) from 1997 in drawer which amazingly came to life when I charged it up. I would like to get it going for comedy value. With a sim adapter it recognised a current micro sim enough to ask for the pin but seems being 5G is isn’t backwards compatible to find the GSM network.

I found some old EE / orange 2G sims on eBay but can’t see Vodafone. Does anyone have an old PAYG one they would be willing to sell or give me? Or even point me to any available commercially? Thanks.

The problem with old SIMs is that after 3mths of inactivity, the SIM is deleted from the network.

I use GiffGaff SIMs for a couple of GSM alarm systems, which work with 2g only.

Per the above, the existence of a SIM does not mean it is attached to a network. If they’re not used (and PAYG) they will be deleted after about 6 months inactivity. How do I know? Many years ago I had to make the system that attached SIMs to the network …. And then deleted them 6 months later about 1000% faster. This was because marketing dished out free SIMs at festivals with a few quid credit on them….. Arrgh.

Anyway - it is likely that any SIM will do, as long as it is “live”. Get a boggo PAYG SIM from the whoever the phone is locked to, and it will almost certainly be fine. Most of the IoT world runs on 2G which is why the decommissioning of the 2G network has been pushed out to 2033.
