My IBM thinkpad has started freezing (sometimes accompanied by a tone). It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing; completely random, the screen just freezes and not even ctrl alt del has any effect.
Strangely I can still adjust the screen brighness via the keyboard
Also, the computer, after freezing will not restart. I have to turn it off and on several times. Often it will freeze at the logging in stage or even before!

The problem started whilst trying to install a game (command and conquer generals). The game has been installed before without any problems.

I removed a panel from the base of the computer and found two wires marked main and aux floating around free to touch the pcb - i'm wondering if this could have done something?
Thanks

Think i've found the problem - memory modules - as soon as you push the connector the computer freezes - i've wedged some paper in it.
