I have a BT WHoleHome mesh network, connected to VM Router. Wifi is turned off on the router but it's still in router mode (not modem mode) so I can make use of the security the router provides.

Having had the Sky engineer out to look at why the Sky Q Mini box consistently dropped its connection to the Sky Q box, he told me it was because the Sky boxes can't cope with mesh networks. He connected the primary sky box directly into the router, displacing one of the many home automation bridges I seem to have,

Anyway, the point. I bought a TP-LINK TL-SG108E 8 port Network Switch, plugged it into a BT WholeHome disc in my office, and connected the bridges to this. All but the stty LightWaveRF bridge coped and successfully connected to its respective service.

However, what followed was:
  • Wifes work laptop (on WHoleHome Wifi) couldn't connect to its threat prevention service.
  • Wife unable to connect VPN
  • Garmin smart scales (Wifi) couldn't connect to its internet service
  • General, seemingly random, drops in internet connectivity for all wireless devices
Verified by connecting her laptop to a 4G hotspot and all services work, connected back to wireless, all broken. Turned off the switch and all its connected devices and solved the issue.

So why has this happened and what do I need to change to remedy the issue?

Cheers

What's the betting that as it's a managed switch, with an IP, the default IP is the same as my router........

Check the ip addresses for your Wi-Fi clients and those wired clients on the switch

I'd suspect they are not on the same subnet. The BT device is acting as router like your VM.

e.g wifi could be 192.168.0.* and the ones connected to switch (via BT device) may be on something like 192.168.1.*

If that is the case you need to make the BT Device just an access point and not a router.

And Sky Q works just fine with my Asus ZEN mesh.

Worth checking to see if you can manually assign the IP of the switch to eliminate that
