Remotely factory resetting an iPhone?

So I sold my old iPhone and sent it to the buyer yesterday, however in my haste I've just realised I forgot to factory reset the device. Is it possible to do this remotely in such a way it allows the new owner to sign in with their own icloud account and use the device rather than just permanently locking it?

Even remote erasing it through iCloud will still have the activation lock enabled. It looks like you have to log into it physically.

I've just checked my iCloud account and the device is lot listed so maybe I did factory reset it and forgot. Either way I've messaged the new owner and let him know he may have to send it back to me.
