Apologies for my ignorance! I might be letting my out building as office space and it will need WiFi. I currently have BT disc hubs dotted around and would hope to put one in the out building too. Is is possible to split access to the signal to protect our privacy as well as the privacy of the office?

Technically you want separate clams

Non technically, most routers will offer a guest network that has no access to the “main” network. I think that’ll do what you want.

Thank you. Is a separate clam a whole new router plugged into the same line? Presumably it would be more secure?

Clam = stupid auto correct of vlan.

One router can do it but probably not something BT provided. You also need to consider what the isp contract says about letting others use your connection and the legal ramifications if they do something illegal with it.

Probably better to get a second line put in and keep it totally separate.

Thank you. That's something I wouldn't have even thought of!

There aren't really any legal ramifications of letting others use your wifi. I guess at the extreme end, if somebody was downloading child porn or accessing extremist materials then you could potentially have an uncomfortable conversation with the police. But ultimately you aren't responsible for what other people do with your internet connection.

The point about your ISP contract is real though, most likely it will stipulate home and domestic use only with working from home being allowed. And effectively selling off your home connection as part of a business contract is almost certainly against their T&Cs. Then again, the chances of them noticing are pretty small.

From the technical side, as said creating a guest wifi network is pretty standard for most routers these days. And setting up a completely separate wired subnet also quite possible although technically a bit more involved.
